Coach Q&A: Perry on Packers S Charles Woodson

Green Bay --- After missing nine games with a broken collarbone, safety Charles Woodson was able to jump right back into action against the Minnesota Vikings last weekend and play a key role in containing Adrian Peterson. In this week's Coach Q&A, safeties coach Darren Perry discusses Woodson's first game back, his strong comments about the local media and why it's important for Woodson to stay disciplined at his new position.

Woodson has 38 interceptions and nine touchdowns in nine years with the Packers. And, of course, a big part of Woodson's success has been taking calculated risks. But as Perry explains, the job description changes at safety:

Q: How difficult is it to make the open-field tackles he did after sitting out for so long?

Perry: ?Regardless of how long you?ve been out, tackling in the open field is going to be a challenge for any defensive back, particularly in space against a good running back. When they get to that second and third level, a lot of the backs in this league are all pretty doggone good. They?re taught to make defenders miss, so it?s always going to be a challenge. Some backs are tougher than others. Nonetheless, it?s something we have to do. It?s part of our job description.?

Q: When you looked at the film, how did Woodson play in his first game back?

Perry: ?He was good. I think Charles is probably his toughest critic. So I?m sure he?s not satisfied with it, with the standard of play that he?s set. There?s going to be times when he doesn?t feel he?s playing up to his standard of play. It was good enough for a win and we look at things from a team, from a collective standpoint. When we collectively play well like that, we?ll be tough to beat.?

Q: When he had a chance to sit back and look at his game over the break, was there something specifically he wanted to improve on at safety?

Perry: ?I think more than anything else, just getting comfortable. Communicating. Staying in position. Not playing with as much freedom as you may be afforded if you?re playing the slot position when we go to sub. So a little bit more disciplined and a little bit more patient because you can?t stick your nose where it doesn?t belong. If you do, sometimes you?re putting the whole defense at risk.?

Q: You want to be disciplined at safety, and that?s important. But he?s also made a lot of plays trusting hunches here and there, too. Do you want him to keep some of that freedom with Charles?

Perry: ?You just have to know when you can and when you can?t. Because if you?re the last line, you can?t go sticking your nose in the backfield on a play pass and something gets over the top. That just demoralizes the defense. You have to exercise a little more patience and realize that you may go a few snaps and may not have as much action as you?d like. But you still can?t take (chances) and put the defense at risk.?

Q: Is that a tough balance?

Perry: ?It is, particularly when you?re used to being involved in the action every play. You just have to understand that I have to stick back and I have to read and I have to make sure that I?m doing my job first and foremost. And that?s an unselfish aspect that you have to have on a good defense because everybody has roles.?

Q: He seemed upset after the game about being pigeonholed as a ?locker-room guy? and that whole narrative. Is he being short-changed? How much game does he have left?

Perry: ?I think ?Wood? can still play at a high level. I think he has proven that he can still run. I think the most important thing is that you can run and if you?re healthy. I think sitting out for all those weeks at that age, I mean, naturally people are going to question how much you have left in the tank. The great ones, they don?t worry about that. They keep plugging away and keep going.?

Q: Vernon Davis? numbers are down this season. How are you guys treating him?

Perry: ?He?s a tremendous weapon for them. We?d be foolish to think that he?s not capable of changing the whole dynamic of a football game. So we always have to be aware of where he is and know that he?s very capable of getting the vertical throws. He?s just as big a part of their offense as anyone in terms of making big plays. We?ve got to be aware of him.?
