And that's not all ? at least two films will follow episode 7, according to chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company Robert E. Iger.

"Our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years," Iger said in a statement.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," George Lucas said in a statement. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.

"I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come," Lucas continued. "Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment and consumer products."

There's no word yet on the plot of the films.

The last new "Star Wars" film was "Star Wars: Episode III ? Revenge of the Sith" in 2005, which concluded the prequel trilogy that began in 1999 with "Star Wars: Episode I ? The Phantom Menace." It was a 16-year wait for "Star Wars" fans in between the original trilogy's conclusion, 1983's "Star Wars: Episode VI ? Return of the Jedi."

"Star Wars" will be seen outside theaters in the future as well, according to CFO and senior executive vice president of The Walt Disney Company Jay Rasulo.

"We also expect to utilize Star Wars in other businesses including Parks & Resorts, in games and in our television business," Rasulo said.

The Walt Disney theme parks already boast one Star Wars ride, "Star Tours," which was recently revamped to include more of the franchise's beloved characters like Darth Vader and more elements from the prequel films.

There had also been rumors of a "Star Wars" TV show, which, if it existed, would presumably now air on Disney-owned network ABC. In the past, Lucasfilm had stated that writers had begun work on scripts, and Lucas said that the show would be "soap opera" with a "film noir" atmosphere.

Reaction to the news by fans has been mixed.

"I'm quietly confident that the Disney buy out will be the best thing to happen to Star Wars in decades," Telegraph film critic Robbie Collins tweeted.

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, who parodied the first three "Star Wars" films in three separate specials on "Family," brought up the animated film and box office disappointment released by Disney last year.

"Looking forward to seeing what exciting new Star Wars adventures will be cooked up by the dream factory that brought us Mars Needs Moms!" he said on Twitter.

A user named Olan Rogers focused on the monetary aspect.

"I'm sad to see George Lucas, who had such great ideals about filmmaking when he started Star Wars, abandon them for money many years later," he tweeted.

The brightly-colored, flashing lights of neon signs and the city of Las Vegas go together like gin and tonic water, so it?s no surprise that Sin City is the site of?the Neon Museum, which its?founders say is the world?s largest museum of neon signage.

On Saturday, when the museum?opens its doors, visitors will be able to view a collection of more than 150 neon signs - some vintage dating back to the 1930s, others more recent.

But all the signs are an important part of the social, architectural, design and pop-culture history of Las Vegas,?said Danielle Kelly, the museum?s executive director.

?Everyone knows the Stardust, which is highly recognized by so many people all over the world,? Kelly said.?The museum has three different versions of signs from the iconic Stardust Hotel-Casino, which was demolished in 2007 after an almost half-century run. During its heyday, the resort was considered the ultimate in luxury and style.

Other signs are from lesser-celebrated properties, like the one from the Algiers Hotel -?once ?the place for a power breakfast,? for locals, Kelly said. Other signs are from the Moulin Rouge, the Desert Inn, the Flamingo and other bygone hotels, restaurants, casinos and businesses.

The museum features a two-acre outdoor space known as the Neon Boneyard, and?a visitor center housed inside the former La Concha Motel lobby, a distinctive modern shell-shaped building from the early 1960s.

The initial effort to collect the signs began in the 1980s when a local arts group recognized their historic and artistic value, as many signs were being destroyed when buildings were torn down, Kelly said.?In 1996, the formal collection began with a handful of rescued signs.

The museum has been offering tours informally since 2008, but they were by appointment only. As part of the official opening, three electrified signs will be included for the first time in the permanent collection in the Neon Boneyard.

Today, the museum?s collection includes almost 200 signs, as well as?hundreds of pieces of signs. Some signs have been restored, but most have not. Many have peeling paint and faded colors but ?are visceral and alluring.?Their imperfect condition is really meaningful,? Kelly said. ?But all the signs are significant, and tell a story.?

About 15 restored signs are currently installed as public art in downtown Las Vegas.

Kelly recommends that visitors take a night drive down a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard just north of the main downtown area, or Fremont Street, where seven signs are installed, for an authentic experience down memory lane. In 2009, the boulevard became one of three U.S. urban streets to be named a Federal Scenic Byway by the Department of Transportation, she said.

The museum?s opening is part of a much larger city-wide revitalization, said Courtney Fitzgerald, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Since?2010, more than $9.2 billion has been invested in tourism-related development in the greater Las Vegas area,?which includes new restaurants, new cultural?institutions?and remodeled hotels -?like the Golden Gate Hotel?& Casino, the city?s first hotel and casino. Both The Smith Center for the Performing Arts?and The Mob Museum (National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement) opened in 2012, she said.

In addition, ?there has been a trend lately in people wanting to know about the history of Las Vegas, how the city got started.?The Mob Museum and the Neon Museum both tell that story,? Fitzgerald said. People often associate classic neon signs with ?old? Las Vegas, so they ?are excited to see those signs are still living on in some shape and form.?

Kelly, the executive director, said unlike so many cities that have pasts steeped in history, visiting the Neon Museum is a unique opportunity to pay homage to one of the country?s newer cities. Visitors to Rome can savor ruins from antiquity, but ?in the Boneyard, you can feel the history of Las Vegas.?

Tickets are $18 for adults; $12 for students, senior citizens, veterans and Nevada residents; and children ages 6 and under are free. Tours of the Neon Boneyard, which last about an hour, will be available every half hour beginning at 10 a.m., with the last tour departing at 4 p.m., every Monday through Saturday. The La Concha Visitors? Center will be open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

New Delhi:? Amid allegations of dubious funding into the companies of BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, the Corporate Affairs Ministry today said it is looking into investments made in his company.

?The matter is being looked into,? a senior Corporate Affairs Ministry official said.

He was responding to a query on whether the Ministry has started probe into allegations of dubious funding into Gadkari?s company.

Embarrassing details have come out about the alleged dubious funding of Maharashtra-based Purti Power and Sugar Ltd, run by Gadkari.

On Tuesday, Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily had said that Registrars of Companies would inquire into the allegations.

Media reports claim that major investments and large loans to Purti were made by a construction firm Ideal Road Builders (IRB) group, which had won contracts between 1995 and 1999, when Gadkari was PWD minister in Maharashtra.

The BJP chief, who is set for his second term, has denied the allegations and has offered himself and his companies to any probe.

Genome analysis of pancreas tumors reveals new pathway

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? The latest genomic analysis of pancreatic tumors identified two new pathways involved in the disease, information that could be capitalized on to develop new and earlier diagnostic tests for the disease, said a Baylor College of Medicine physician-scientist who was part of the local team that took part in the international effort. A report appears online in the journal Nature.

"We now know every gene involved in pancreatic cancer," said Dr. William Fisher, professor of surgery and director of the Elkins Pancreas Center at BCM. "This study ushers in a whole new era of taking care of patients with pancreatic cancer. We will look back on this as a turning point in understanding and treating this disease."

Five-year collaboration

The study follows a five-year collaboration between the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center, said Fisher.

The Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center was one of three sequencing centers worldwide that analyzed the genomes of pancreatic tumors and normal tissues taken from 142 patients with the disease. The BCM center, along with the Australian Pancreatic Center Genome Initiative and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research Pancreatic Cancer Genome Study carried out detailed studies on 99 of the tumors, identifying 1982 mutations that resulted in a change to a protein and 1,628 significant copy number variations events in which the structure of the chromosomes themselves are changed, either deleting or duplicating genetic information.

The multi-institution, international consortium of researchers discovered mutations in genes involved in chromatin modification (changes that affect the way DNA is packaged inside the cell) and axon guidance (the process by which the axon -- a long threadlike project that carries impulses away from the neuron -- is guided to grow to its proper target).

New information

"This is a category of genes not previously linked to pancreatic cancer," said Fisher. "We are poised to jump on this gene list and do some exciting things."

New information is much welcome in the field of pancreatic cancer, which is the fourth leading cause of cancer death with an overall five-year survival rate of less than 5 percent. The figures have not changed substantially in the past 50 years.

The study is the first to report findings from primary tumors in the disease. Previously only cell lines or tumors transplanted into mice had been used because the tumors are so small. "Therefore it required new techniques to sensitively identify mutations that were important to the development of cancer," said Dr. David Wheeler, associate professor in the BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center who oversees the center's cancer projects. Wheeler and Fisher are also members of the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at BCM.

Wheeler pointed out that large, multi-centered studies using well-annotated groups of patients with cancer are pivotal to studies such as this, which promise to guide the way toward developing new treatment strategies.

Other BCM people who took part include Marie-Claude Gingras, Nipun Kakkar, Fengmei Zhao, Yuan Qing Wu, Min Wang, Donna M. Muzny, Sally E.Hodges, Jennifer Drummond, Kyle Chang, Yi Han, Lora Lewis, Huyen Dinh and Christian Buhay, as well as Dr. Richard A. Gibbs, director of the BCM Human Genome Sequencing Center.

Precisely targeted electrical brain stimulation alters perception of faces, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? In a painless clinical procedure performed on a patient with electrodes temporarily implanted in his brain, Stanford University doctors pinpointed two nerve clusters that are critical for face perception. The findings could have practical value in treating people with prosopagnosia -- the inability to distinguish one face from another -- as well in gaining an understanding of why some of us are so much better than others at recognizing and remembering faces.

In a study published Oct. 24 in the Journal of Neuroscience, the scientists showed that mild electrical stimulation of two nerve clusters spaced a half-inch apart in a brain structure called the fusiform gyrus caused the subject's perception of faces to instantly become distorted while leaving his perception of other body parts and inanimate objects unchanged.

The surprised reaction of the subject, Ron Blackwell of Santa Clara, Calif., is captured in a video made during the procedure. "You just turned into somebody else. Your face metamorphosed," he tells the researcher in the video.

Blackwell, who is now 47, was undergoing medical treatment under the direction of Josef Parvizi, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology and neurological sciences at the School of Medicine, whose lab collaborates with that of Kalanit Grill-Spector, PhD, associate professor of psychology at the School of Humanities and Sciences.

The face Blackwell was looking at was Parvizi's. "Ron didn't see my face vaporize or go blank. Instead, it just seemed to warp before his eyes," Parvizi said.

In 2010, Grill-Spector and then-graduate student Kevin Weiner (now a postdoctoral researcher in Grill-Spector's lab and a co-author of the new study) discovered that the fusiform gyrus contains two nerve clusters (designated as pFus and mFus) that respond more strongly to faces than to hands, legs, cars, guitars, flowers or buildings.

Grill-Spector's lab has been studying the fusiform gyrus' role in face recognition as well as in prosopagnosia or "face blindness," a condition made famous by neurologist and author Oliver Sacks, MD, who himself suffers from it. People with prosopagnosia simply cannot distinguish one face from another, although all other aspects of their vision and visual-information processing are normal. Some people, like Sacks, are born with the condition while others acquire it as a result of an injury to the fusiform gyrus, Grill-Spector said.

"We can learn a lot about the function of different brain regions by studying these disorders and relating them to the anatomical sites where brain damage has occurred," she said. "But the injuries vary a great deal from one affected person to the next, and they are typically not confined to the fusiform gyrus. This limits our ability to localize a particular deficit to a particular brain site."

Blackwell's arrival at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, along with a generous slice of serendipity, allowed the Stanford doctors to conduct the first-ever study of the fusiform gyrus combining two imaging techniques (fMRI and electrocorticography, or intracranial recording) and electrical brain stimulation. The result was the first-ever proof that appropriate activity in the two nerve clusters, pFus and mFus, was critical to face recognition.

Blackwell had time on his hands. He was spending a week in a bed at Stanford Hospital with a packet of electrodes snugly abutting a part of his brain that doctors believed might be the initiating site, or focus, of his epileptic seizures. These seizures, which he'd been experiencing since age 11, had been well-controlled by drugs. But by late 2010, his medication was failing.

Blackwell was married and the father of two young girls. "It wasn't just me anymore. I didn't want to be vulnerable to disorienting episodes that could occur at any time of the day or night," he said. Referred by his primary physician to Parvizi, he learned of a medical procedure that might provide relief.

Epileptic seizures are, at root, electrical storms triggered when a short circuit at one small spot within the brain, called the focus, causes waves of electrical activity to spread throughout the organ. (The exact location varies from patient to patient.) Most of the time seizures can be controlled with medication. When they can't, one proven treatment involves a surgical procedure in which a portion of the patient's skull is temporarily removed, allowing access to the surface of the brain near the spot thought to be responsible for initiating the seizures. A packet containing numerous electrode leads is placed near the brain's surface, with each electrode acting like a separate stethoscope monitoring the collective electrical activity of perhaps a half-million nerve cells. (That's a drop in the bucket, considering that a healthy human brain contains 200 billion of them.) The patient remains off medication for several days, eventually culminating in the onset of seizure activity and allowing the neurological team to identify the focus. Surgeons may then be able to excise just enough brain tissue to halt the cycle of self-propagating electrical activity -- in effect, pulling out a fuse in order to break the short circuit -- without affecting any important brain functions.

In September 2011, Blackwell was set to undergo the weeklong monitoring procedure. Based on a thorough neurological workup, electrodes were placed on the surface of a brain region that included the fusiform gyrus, a structure roughly the shape of a hand-rolled cigarette, on the underside of the temporal lobe.

Electrical brain stimulation requires the flow of electricity from one electrode across a small patch of brain tissue to another electrode spaced 1 cm away. It so happens that pFus and mFus, which account for perhaps one-quarter of the fusiform gyrus' bulk, are also 1 cm apart. By fate, two of the inserted electrodes had been positioned almost precisely above the anatomical centers of pFus and mFus in Blackwell's fusiform gyrus, forming a pair that enabled Parvizi to apply the stimulation directly to the two sites simultaneously at the touch of a button.

Doing so instantly altered Blackwell's perception of Parvizi's face. "You almost look like somebody I've seen before, but somebody different," he reported. ." .. You were someone else. Your whole face just sort of metamorphosed ... it's almost like the shape of your facial features drooped."

When the stimulation was halted, the distorted image of Parvizi's face immediately reverted to the normal one, Blackwell reported. Neither sham stimulation, in which a button was pushed but no actual electrical impulse was delivered to pFus and mFus, nor stimulation of nearby sites via other electrode pairs had any effect on Blackwell's face perception. Stimulating pFus and mFus caused no distortion of other objects in the room, he reported.

Throughout this procedure's duration, Parvizi didn't know what to expect. "I was as surprised as the patient was when he suddenly saw my features seem to melt," Parvizi said.

In a follow-on imaging study of Blackwell's brain using a high-resolution fMRI technique that could discriminate among locations as little as 1.8 mm apart, Grill-Spector and her students confirmed Parvizi's findings. Blackwell's pFus and mFus clusters responded with heightened activity to images of faces, but not to those of hands, feet, flowers, cars, guitars, cars or houses.

The Stanford team of neurologists succeeded in locating the focus of Blackwell's seizures, but decided that removing it would be risky because it was too close to other key parts of the brain. But oddly, since the removal of the electrodes, his medication seems to be working again and his seizures have inexplicably abated to a significant extent, for which he thanks God, he said in a recent interview.

The study was funded by the Stanford's Bio-X Neuroventures Program and the National Institutes of Health. Additional co-authors were postdoctoral researchers Corentin Jacques, PhD, Brett Foster, PhD, and Nathan Withoft, PhD; and research assistant Vinitha Rangarajan.

Top BBC editor steps aside during Savile probe

LONDON (AP) ? A top BBC editor stepped aside Monday while the BBC reviews its editorial decision to pull the plug on a segment about sexual abuse allegations against a prominent U.K. children's television star, the late Jimmy Savile.

The broadcaster said Monday the editor of the "Newsnight" program that opted not to broadcast the allegations, Peter Rippon, is "stepping aside with immediate effect."

The BBC says Rippon's explanation of his decision in a blog post earlier was "inaccurate or incomplete in some respects."

He is the first BBC figure directly blamed for the broadcaster's failure to properly report on abuse claims against Savile, who died last year at the age of 84 after a long career in children's television.

The BBC is facing criticism for providing different explanations for pulling the December segment that would have lifted the veil on Savile's abusive history, which had been rumored but not reported on at the time.

Savile hosted the music program "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It." He was also active in numerous charities.

The BBC is set to air its own investigation of its failure to report on Savile's sexual abuses Monday night on the "Panorama" show.

On the show set for broadcast Monday, BBC correspondents claim the Savile segment was pulled because of pressure from senior management.

The fallout and allegations of a cover-up have damaged the BBC's reputation, and Savile's actions are also being investigated by police and other agencies.

Police say there may be more than 200 potential victims of the entertainer, known for his garish track suits and platinum hair.

But is what comes next credible also? Is it plausible?

A few years ago while hunting Intertwinglements, My Black Cat came across a leaflet that was said to originate from the German Government aimed at parents and schools advising them regarding sex education of their children. Apparently it went much further that even the most liberal sex education in the UK.

Unfortunately, black cats are not multilingual and neither is The Witch Doctor so we couldn?t read what it said. Anyway, we can?t find the document now but it was there to be seen some years ago. There is a reference to it in another blog. The question is:

LEGALISED CHILD ABUSE IN GERMANY : SEX AND THE PRE-SCHOOL CHILD

Jimmy Savile may be have been highly intelligent kind of sociopath. Perhaps he even intellectualised child sexual abuse. Who knows? Perhaps his beliefs and actions during his lifetime, will permit us all to question what we regard as paedophilia and form views about it that are moral, sensible, and above all our own, and not dependent on the Creep that might result from the influence of past, present or future pressure groups.

Perhaps we also need to question when sex education becomes grooming.

Perhaps these questions will lead us beyond the UK, beyond the Island of Jersey, and further afield into Europe.
