Use Group Policy Editor to Run Scripts When Shutting Down Your PC

Use Group Policy Editor to Run Scripts When Shutting Down Your PC

Windows: To automate some routine tasks that nobody likes doing during the day, you can use Group Policy Editor to make your PC run a script when you shut it down or log off a user account.

To set up a script to run as soon as you shut down your PC, follow these instructions:

  1. Open GPE by entering "gpedit.msc" (no quotes) into the Run dialog (Win+R).
  2. In the left panel, select "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration."
  3. Double-click "Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)" in the right panel.
  4. Double-click "Shutdown"
  5. Click "Add..."
  6. Navigate to the folder containing the script you want to run.
  7. Click "OK."

You can also use this method to run scripts when logging out of a user profile. This is handy for performing regular maintenance tasks or cleaning up your workspace when you're done, or simply running apps that you don't want running while you're using your machine. Unfortunately, the Group Policy Editor is only available on Professional or Ultimate versions of Windows.

Fandom Roleplays

I have recently been playing a lot of video games (steam has been having a sale...and I'm rather weak when it comes to cheap video games...) I have also been rather bored, so I figured I'd start making up a fandom roleplay thread. New things will be added as I start wanting to do more, and not all of these will be based off of video games and only a few will call for canon characters. Anyways, here is my list of preferences...
  • I will warn you all before you get too far, I do prefer romance in my roleplays, sorry, I'm more interested in them.
  • Be able to give back what I give you, I would like you to be able to post a minimum of five hundred words or three paragraphs. I can post anywhere from three to five paragraphs, depending on how much I am given and I would like to have larger posts. Please just be reasonable.
  • Please be open to playing both genders!
  • There will be MxM pairings and MxF pairings, sorry I'm not too good with FxF pairings.
  • I am fine with blood, gore and swearing but I don?t go into detail about sex(this is more about inexperience than anything else), not saying that it can't happen between our characters.
  • I don't mind OOC talk so if you are one of those people that like to talk to others outside the roleplay, I'm absolutely fine with that.
  • I don?t want any love at first sight kind of things going on, there are times where characters already know each other and have hidden crushes, but I would like to bring out the hidden crush thing, instead of within the first few posts they've already decided to date.
  • So I know you've read all these tell me your favorite flavor of cake or pie, I will not respond if you do not have this.
  • If you have any ideas for the role-play or you want to say ?Hey, how about we do this?? I?m not going to tell you it?s a bad idea, I might even add on to that idea, or we can work something out, I want this to be fun for both of us.
  • I am still a student, so there are times where I won?t be able to respond, and there are times I won?t be able to get to my computer, and I know you?re going to have times like that too, so we?ll both have to be patient, even if it is an exciting part in our role-play, but please if you are going to be gone for an extended time tell me and I'll do the same for you.
  • If there is anything else you want to know please feel free to ask me, I don?t bite.

-Portal
I would love to do a Portal roleplay, but with the robots being more like androids, and look like humans. I would love to do a pairing with the main character and Wheatley. I'd like to be the main character if you wanted to do this. I was thinking that this could continue after Portal 2, Wheatley would have somehow crashed onto Earth, probably in the field that Chell ended up in. There could be other things that go along with this, but I'd like to talk about plot and stuff with my partner. Perhaps we could even do a pairing with two OCs in this universe, depending on the sort of plot line that can be thought of.

-Psychonauts
This would be based off of the PS2 video game, it's a rather lovely game. Anyways we could do a roleplay based on two or four (if we wanted to double) OCs going through Whispering Rock Summer Camp, or we could do a roleplay with the pairing Raz x Lilli where I wouldn't mind playing Raz or we could do Sasha x Milla and I wouldn't mind playing either. Any other ideas would be interesting to go with.

-Percy Jackson Series
I was thinking a group of campers could go on a quest to build the perfect warrior. Since there is a lot of armor/weapons in greek mythology that are quite interesting and would be fun to put modern twists to them. As for why they are getting the equipment to make could be for a lot of reasons, I'd love to hear some suggestions on that. Along with what kind of timeline we should go with for this roleplay according to the books, or make this some sort of Alternate Universe. Any other kind of input would be fantastic.

-Batman
I'm willing to do a roleplay with the villains, OCs or Canons. I would also love to do a crossover with a Batman x Superman pairing, I would like to play Superman.

-The Darkness
Based on the comics only. I would be willing to go OCs on this or I could try my hand at roleplay Jackie.

-Pokemon
I would rather keep this to OCs and usually only the first two or three generations. I would love to do some sort of MxM with this, that would be kind of fun. I'm fine with trainer x trainer, trainer x gym leader, or really anything that can be thought of. I'm not into really roleplaying pokemon, but might consider it if it has something to do with Pokemon Mystery Dungeons. We could also do Rangers as well, if that is something you want to do.

-Fairy Tales
I wouldn't mind taking some classic fairy tales and twisting them into something modern, or sci-fi, or anything really. This goes for FxM and MxM, both could be quite interesting and fun.

Berlusconi's political fate in hands of high court

(AP) ? Silvio Berlusconi's political fate is in the hands of Italy's highest court, which is preparing to hear arguments in the former premier's fraud conviction.

Berlusconi has been convicted of tax fraud in a complex TV rights transaction for his Mediaset network, and sentenced to four-years in prison with a five-year ban on public office. This is his final appeal.

The Court of Cassation on Tuesday hears arguments in the case and is expected to issue a decision later in the day or Wednesday.

Berlusconi has no official role in Italy's uneasy coalition government, but remains influential and was key to the center-right's close second-place finish in February elections. He has a seat in Italy's Senate, which he would have to vacate if the lower courts' verdicts are confirmed.

Thousands protest in Peru as president feels heat

LIMA: Peruvian police used tear gas and water cannon Saturday to drive back thousands of demonstrators protesting against what they said were President Ollanta Humala's unkept promises on schools and jobs.

On the eve of Independence Day celebrations, some 6,000 marchers heeded a call by the country's largest union confederation, CGTP, to turn out in force.

Those taking to the streets included university students, non-governmental activists and human rights groups.

In addition to a national doctors' and nurses strike, Humala now faces unions calling for a rethinking of a new law they fear will force the government to lay off huge numbers of state workers.

Students, meanwhile, are upset about a bill in the legislature that they fear will undercut the autonomy of universities.

Bottom Feeding: The latest Chinese investment craze, downtown Detroit housing

Downtown Detroit has long been one of the nation?s worst housing markets. Home values have plummeted. Vacancies abound. And foreclosure numbers are through the roof. Not that that?s surprising; who?d want to live in a neighborhood with soaring unemployment and the highest rate of violent crime in the US?

The bad news for Detroiters is that the city?s bankruptcy will likely only deepen the decay of its downtown housing market.

That might deter most prospective home buyers. But some look at Detroit?s hard times and see profit.

Specifically, bargain-hunting Chinese investors. Since the bankruptcy was announced, Caroline Chen, a real estate broker in Troy, Michigan, says she?s received ?tons of calls? from people in mainland China.

?I have people calling and saying, ?I?m serious?I wanna buy 100, 200 properties,?? she tells Quartz, noting that one of her colleagues recently sold 30 properties to a Chinese buyer. ?They say ?We don?t need to see them. Just pick the good ones.??

China has the most expensive housing on the planet. Plus, capital controls make it difficult to invest large sums in overseas stocks or property. That?s why when a CCTV broadcast aired in March?after the emergency takeover was announced?saying that for the price of a pair of leather shoes, you could buy two Detroit houses, Chinese investors got excited.

Fantasy baseball Roundtable: What should owners do with Braun?

Ryan Braun's suspension this year doesn't mean he won't contribute to fantasy teams next season.

Morry Gash/AP

Alright, after weeks of speculation, Ryan Braun has officially been suspended for the season -- should his owners stash him or trash him? And what about the other players with possible Biogenesis connections -- are they worth hanging onto? Our fantasy experts Michael Beller and Eric Mack have answers.

Do you have a fantasy question you want our experts to answer? Leave it in the comments below or find Beller and Mack on Twitter. Check back every Wednesday to see if your question made the Roundtable cut.

This week's fantasy prep: Weekly Planner | Waiver Wire | Pitching Report | Injury Report | Roundtable

1. Should owners in keeper leagues stash Braun? Should they consider trading for him?

Mack: Despite his suspension, many fantasy owners and analysts will still consider Ryan Braun a first-round pick next year. That makes him a clear keeper, assuming you don't question whether his production was tied solely to performance-enhancing drugs. One would have to assume the PEDs he took were more for recovery and prevention from injury. When healthy, Braun performs like a first-round draft pick, but his owner cannot bank on him being health 100 percent of the time. It happens to all 30-somethings, which is how old Braun will be next year. Tentatively consider him a late first-round pick in 2014 right now -- because the injury risk is there -- and stash him in all keeper leagues at that value.

Beller: Yeah, I mean, it stinks for Braun's owners that they've lost him for the rest of this year, but don't let that blind you to what he can still do for you in 2014 and beyond. He's still going to be, at worst, just ranked just inside the top 20 next year. Like Mack says, he'll probably be considered a late first rounder. That's the kind of guy you stash in a keeper league, taking the roster hit this year. And yes, I definitely think it's worth kicking the tires on Braun, especially if you're out of it this year and his owner is in the thick of the playoff race. Play up the notion of winning now (something every fantasy owner should embrace) and see if you can't get yourself a 2014 first-round pick at a nice discount.

2. Now that the MLB has shown it is serious about suspensions, what should owners do about the other players with Biogenesis ties, such as Nelson Cruz and Everth Cabrera?

Mack: Await your fate, and unfortunately, the expectation is now a suspension. Many were dead wrong on baseball being unable to levy suspensions for the Biogenesis allegations, yours truly in particular. Depending on the substances, you probably should anticipate that Cruz and Cabrera will draw 50-game suspensions. Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon have already served suspensions -- which seemingly triggered the Biogenesis bust -- so it's unlikely they'll have to serve the 100-game ban that comes with a second offense. Alex Rodriguez, meanwhile, looks like he is in danger of missing the rest of this season and perhaps more. Owners might not be able to get anything in return for these guys, but by all means, put them on the trading block.

Beller: I was right there with Mack. I didn't think there was any chance the Biogenesis guys would get suspended, and MLB proved us all wrong, with authority, on Monday. Now that we know Braun's penalty, it's hard to imagine Cruz and Cabrera avoiding the wrath of the MLB drug czars. The problem is, you're probably not going to be able to convince a rival owner to trade you anything of value for either of them. At this point, you'll likely just have to bite the bullet and enjoy the production they provide for as long as they can provide it. As Mack points out, I wouldn't necessarily try to deal Colon, though. There's a good chance the league will decide he has already served his sentence for this offense.

3. Who do you have your eye on with the trade deadline just one week away?

Mack: Fantasy football players.

No, but seriously, the trade deadline has lost some of its luster. Matt Garza was a legitimate trade that altered the fantasy landscape, but those have become fewer and further between in recent years. Alfonso Soriano will be intriguing for AL-only owners, but the only player we can really seeing getting a significant boost will be Yovani Gallardo. If he gets dealt to a contender and gets hot, he can be a big-time fantasy catalyst down the stretch. Barring that, you have to watch the closer movement -- like always. Fantasy value can be created and destroyed at the position quickly every day, though -- it doesn't take a trade (see Jason Grilli -- forearm strain).

Beller: I'm keeping a close eye on Jake Peavy. The White Sox have been terrible this year, and with their aging roster, it will likely take more than a year for them to turn it around. In other words, Peavy probably won't be part of another winner on the South Side of Chicago, and they might as well cash him in for a haul of prospects. It's hard to bet on a pitcher getting more wins with a new team, but it can't hurt for him to get out of Chicago. Two teams rumored to have interest are the Red Sox and Cardinals, and either would be great landing spots for the veteran righty, especially St. Louis. Be alert, NL-only leaguers. Peavy would be worth emptying your FAAB budget.

4. Let's say you have enough roster space to speculate on one closer-in-waiting. Who is it and why?

Mack: Jose Cisnero. The Astros are a floundering franchise, and they should probably capitalize on closer Jose Veras' career year by dealing him for long-term help before the trade deadline. Cisnero isn't a great arm, but he does have a reasonable chance of taking over as a closer in the coming week. That would be your best bet right now. If you're looking longer term, perhaps Bruce Rondon of the Tigers is your man. He isn't pitching consistently enough to serve as a closer for the contending Tigers, but he has the potential to grow into that role before the end of the season if the Tigers don't add a veteran closer via trade.

Beller: For me, it's Pedro Strop. It would be a complete shock if the Cubs didn't trade Kevin Gregg by next week, and manager Dale Sveum said Strop is likely to take over ninth-inning duties if and when Gregg is shipped out of town. Strop has made nine appearances with the Cubs since being part of the trade that sent Scott Feldman to the Orioles, and has yet to allow a run. He has 10 strikeouts against two walks in 7.2 innings in that stretch. If you're looking for a guy who isn't closing now but might be next week, he's your best bet.

Internet marketing firm Red Ventures to add 20 jobs in Wilmington

photo NANCY PIERCE

Red Ventures is adding 20 jobs in Wilmington.

Fort Mill, S.C.-based Red Ventures is expanding its Wilmington sales team, a move that means 20 new jobs.

According to spokesperson Kylie Craig, the internet marketing firm?s impending hires are the direct result of Red Ventures? 2012 acquisition of HomeInsurance.com.

?Since then, the business has grown incredibly,? she says, adding that the HomeInsurance workforce has expanded beyond Wilmington and is now also in Fort Mill. ?And our Wilmington team is knocking it out of the park.?

The jobs are all inside-sales positions offering hourly pay and uncapped commission. Average earners typically make between $40,000 and $60,000, she says. Inside-sales associates also have the opportunity to gain ownership of the company, she adds.

But will the extra 20 jobs mean a physical expansion in Wilmington?

?We are not expanding yet, but I definitely emphasize the ?yet,?? she says. ?We are looking to find new people, bring them in, and then just grow our presence in Wilmington.?

Hiring stories have been commonplace at Red Ventures lately, as our sister paper, Charlotte Business Journal, recently reported the company?s intention to hire 50 at its corporate campus.

Interested job seekers are encouraged to learn more by registering for an ?interview day? on the company website.

Currently, the company has 60 employees in Wilmington and 1,100 employees at the Fort Mill headquarters. As a whole, Red Ventures counts 1,950 employees in Miami, San Antonio, Fort Mill and Wilmington. More than 600 of those hires happened in the last six months.

Google wants to put free hotspots around San Francisco?

Google

Samsung phone

Samsung

The city of San Francisco says it will consider Google's proposal.

SAN FRANCISCO ? Google is offering $600,000 to set up free wireless Internet hotspots in 31 public spaces in San Francisco, but city officials said they need to review annual maintenance costs before it could be approved.

Google has previously funded public wireless projects in its home city of Mountain View, California, in New York Chelsea's neighborhood and around Boston's South Station. The search giant is based 30 miles away from San Francisco but employs hundreds of workers who commute from the city.

San Francisco officials say public Internet service is long overdue for a city that has eclipsed Silicon Valley as the epicenter of the startup ecosystem in recent years, attracting a dramatic influx of venture capital investment and young tech workers.

"There are cities not only here in the U.S. but in many, many foreign countries where free Wi-Fi is ubiquitous. We have a lot of work to do," Supervisor Mark Farrell, who spearheaded the negotiations with Google, said by telephone Wednesday.

Mission Dolores Park, the weekend Mecca of San Francisco's young tech crowd, would be among the areas covered by the plan, as would tourist destinations including Alamo Square as well as Washington Square in North Beach. Some less affluent areas such as the historic Portsmouth Square in Chinatown and the Tenderloin Recreation Center would also be included.

In a statement, Google executive Veronica Bell said the company hopes the free Wi-Fi will be "a resource that the city and other local groups will be able to use in their efforts to bridge the digital divide and make their community stronger."

Because it controls so much of the Web, Google benefits from an increase in Internet use. The company reported $50 billion in revenue in 2012, mostly by selling ads targeting Internet traffic. According to a new study released this week, Google's various properties account for a quarter of all U.S. Internet traffic.

The company said it would not own or manage the network. The angel investor Ron Conway, one of Mayor Ed Lee's staunchest political allies, is coordinating the project through his non-profit SF.Citi.

Members of the local board of supervisors, who still have to formally approve the gift, said the project would undergo a normal review process to make sure that government contracts to install and maintain the service are properly awarded. In 2006, a similar plan to install wireless coverage in San Francisco was scuttled after the deal came under political scrutiny. Officials also said they would review the details of the system's maintenance costs.

In the case of New York City, the network in Chelsea cost $115,000 to build but $45,000 a year to maintain.

San Francisco parks director Phil Ginsburg called Google's gift "no strings attached" and said the city could bear the maintenance costs. Google's donation would cover two years' worth of maintenance costs, which amount to $50,000, he said.

Ginsburg said officials picked 31 locations out of the city's 200 public spaces based on a criteria of geographic and economic diversity. Some areas, including Golden Gate Park, were too big to cover with the sum donated by Google.

Installation of the equipment could begin as early as December and be completed by mid-2014, Farrell said.

Pope all smiles as Brazilians swarm his car in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis wants to ignite the passion of Roman Catholics for their faith while on his first international trip, and the boisterous, sometimes frenzied welcome he got on his first day in Rio seemed to fill those hopes.

Returning to his home continent for the first time since becoming pontiff, Francis smiled broadly as thousands of people rushed his car Monday after it became stuck behind buses and taxis when his driver made a wrong turn on a main avenue in Rio's center.

It was a nightmarish scene for security officials, but clearly a delight and another opportunity to connect for this pope, who was scheduled to take a day off Tuesday for rest and private meetings.

The ecstatic throngs forced his motorcade to repeatedly come to a standstill, weeks after violent protests against the government paralyzed parts of Brazil. Francis' driver turned into the wrong side of a boulevard at one point, missing lanes that had been cleared. Other parts of the pope's route to the city center weren't lined with fencing, giving the throngs more chances to get close, with uniformed police nowhere in sight to act as crowd control.

The three dozen visible Vatican and Brazilian plainclothes security officials struggled to keep the crowds at bay. Francis not only looked calm but got even closer to the people. He rolled down his back-seat window, waved to the crowd and touched those who reached inside. He kissed a baby a woman handed to him.

"His secretary was afraid, but the pope was happy," said the papal spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The pope is here on a seven-day visit meant to fan the fervor of the faithful around the globe. That task has grown more challenging as Catholics stray, even in strongholds of the religion such as Brazil, yet it seemed to come easily to Francis even on the drive from the airport to an official opening ceremony.

After finally making it past crowds and blocked traffic, Francis switched to an open-air vehicle for a cruise along main streets past crowds of people who screamed wildly as he waved and smiled. He left his popemobile ? the bulletproof one ? in the Vatican garage so he could better connect with people during the church's World Youth Day.

Vatican officials insisted they had no concern for the pope's safety as his vehicles eased through the masses, but Lombardi acknowledged there might have been some "errors" that need correcting.

"This is something new, maybe also a lesson for the coming days," Lombardi said.

Many in the crowd looked stunned to see the pope, with some standing still and others sobbing loudly.

"I can't travel to Rome, but he came here to make my country better ... and to deepen our faith," Idaclea Rangel, a 73-year-old Catholic, said, choking through her tears after the pope passed by.

As many as 1 million young people from around the world are expected in Rio for the Catholic youth fest, a seemingly tailor-made event for the Argentine-born pope, who has proven enormously popular in his four months on the job. But the fervor of the crowds that regularly greet Francis in St. Peter's Square was nothing compared with the raucous welcome in Rio.

Popes generally get a warm welcome in Latin America; even the more aloof Pope Benedict XVI received a hero's welcome when he visited Mexico and Cuba in 2012. John Paul II frequently received rock star treatment, and during one 1996 visit to Venezuela, his motorcade was similarly mobbed when he stopped to greet well-wishers.

Outside Rio's Guanabara government palace where the pope was officially welcomed, Alicia Velazquez, a 55-year-old arts teacher from Buenos Aires, waited to catch a glimpse of the man she knew well when he was archbishop of her hometown.

"It was so amazing when he was selected, we just couldn't believe it. We cried and hugged one another," Velazquez said. "I personally want to see if he's still the same man as simple and humble whom we all knew. I have faith that he's remained the same."

Francis displayed that humility in greeting President Dilma Rousseff, saying he understood that to really know Brazilians, one must pass through their heart.

"So let me knock gently at this door," Francis said in Portuguese at the official welcoming ceremony. "I have neither silver nor gold, but I bring with me the most precious thing given to me: Jesus Christ."

On the plane trip to Rio, Francis had lamented that an entire generation of young people risked not knowing what it's like to work thanks to an economic crisis that has seen youth unemployment skyrocket in many European countries while leaving the poor of the developing world behind.

"People get their dignity from work, they earn their bread," he told reporters aboard the plane. "Young people in this moment are in crisis."

Francis arrived at a tense time for Brazil, as the country reels from sometimes violent demonstrations that began last month as a protest against public transport price hikes and mushroomed into a wave of protests against government corruption, inefficiency and spending for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Those protests continued after Francis' arrival. Police and anti-government protesters clashed outside the government palace.

The government has spent about $52 million for Francis' visit, but he does not appear to be a focus of protesters' rage.

"We've got nothing against the pope. Nobody here is against him," said Christopher Creindel, a 22-year-old art student and Rio native protesting outside the government palace. "This protest is against our politicians."

Lombardi confirmed that a homemade explosive device was found Sunday by Brazilian authorities in a public toilet near the basilica at Aparecida, a Marian shrine that Francis is to visit Wednesday. Vatican security was informed of the device but didn't think it was aimed at the pope, Lombardi said.

"There are no concerns for security. The concerns are that the enthusiasm is so great that it's difficult to respond to so much enthusiasm for the pope. But there is no fear and no concern," he told reporters.

Francis' weeklong schedule underscores his commitment to make his pontificate focus on the poor. He will walk through one of Rio's shantytowns, or favelas, and meet with juvenile offenders, an extension of his call for a more missionary church that goes to the peripheries to preach.

He will also pray at Aparecida, an indication of his strong Marian devotion that is shared in much of Latin America. And, in a rather incongruous matchup, he will preside over a procession re-enacting Christ's crucifixion on the beach at Copacabana, ground zero of Rio's Sin City.

Alex Augusto, a 22-year-old seminarian dressed in the bright green official T-shirt for pilgrims, said Monday that he and five friends made the journey from Brazil's Sao Paulo state to "show that contrary to popular belief, the church isn't only made up of older people, it's full of young people. We want to show the real image of the church."

73 Sports Movies In 73 Days: 'Kingpin' - With Leather - Uproxx

Kingpin

As some readers, Twitterers and strangers in my Turkish bathhouse have pointed out, there has been a very strange and presumably coincidental trend on cable TV lately, with the random HBO, Cinemax and Showtime channels airing some of these movies that I?ve written about for this 73 Sports Movies in 73 Days feature within a day or two of posting. Naturally, I?d love to take credit for being powerful enough to manipulate the powers of cable programming, but if networks are going to listen to me about anything, I?d prefer that it be my idea for a 24-hour sitcom network that airs nothing but Seinfeld, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Cheers and Wings. I?d call it ?Good NBC.?

But today was the fourth time that a cable channel caused me to change my mind, as I was already in the middle of watching one sports movie when I realized that another was on. And since this one was the 1996 Farrelly brothers comedy, Kingpin, I stopped watching the amazing disaster of a film that I had begun and instead watched what I remember as one of the funniest movies of my awkward teenage years.

How has it aged? It is now simply one of the best films I?ve ever seen, period. Let?s explore why.

How I Remembered Kingpin From 1996

I can?t even think of the last time that I actually watched the Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray comedy, but I remember that for at least one semester in college, I had the poster on my wall, in between Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction, because I WAS SO F*CKING ALTERNATIVE. Seriously, I was a clich? wrapped up in a stereotype.

When I snuck into Kingpin in ?96 with my friends, we laughed so hard that it hurt, because it was one of the most ridiculous raunchy comedies that we?d ever seen. Case in point:

Kingpin landlady

After all, the Farrellys helped usher in a new era of one-upmanship in dick jokes and sight gags, like pie-f*cking and pee-drinking, so of course the first thing that I wondered after watching Kingpin this morning was, ?What the hell went wrong with the Farrelly brothers??

But that?s another conversation that I?ll probably eventually have at FilmDrunk. In the meantime, this is a personal essay and discussion on how a movie about a bowling phenom on the brink of superstardom losing his hand, career and all-around reason to live because of his own naivety coupled with his rival?s bitter willingness to do whatever it takes to remain at the top affected my life.

The Moral Of The Story To A 16-Year Old

At its very core, Kingpin is a movie about how life sucks and nothing is really fair unless you?re willing to sacrifice your soul and humanity to do whatever it takes to crush the spirits and hopes of those around you. This, to teenage me, was absolutely hilarious, because seeing a grown man hit rock bottom and having sex with the most disgusting woman in the world is amazing, because there?s no way in hell that my life will ever be this bad:

Psycho 1Psycho 2

After all, 16-year old me wanted to write the world?s best movies before becoming a powerful and beloved politician, and maybe I?d even get back in better shape and work toward playing baseball in college. There is no such thing as rock bottom to a teenager in the suburbs, because reality is all puppy dogs and bong water.

So Kingpin was essentially just a film that taught me:

  1. Amish people exist and they?re different from me, so make fun of them because everything different is strange.
  2. If someone tells me the grossest, most obnoxious joke that he can think of, tell it back to him, only grosser and more obnoxious, because that?s true comedy. The Aristocrats!
  3. Bill Murray is the funniest man on the face of the planet.

The Moral Of The Story To A 34-Year Old

The realization that life can be so terrible isn?t really as funny as it was almost 20 years ago. The finer points of Roy Munson?s plummet to rock bottom, Ishmael?s inability to overcome his sibling rivalry and save his family as the banks are trying to take their land and Claudia?s helplessness at the hands of abusive relationship after abusive relationship (not to mention her acceptance of the ?whore? label) are just downright depressing now. That?s not to say that the same things that I laughed at 18 years ago aren?t still funny, but some of the scenes that once hurt my sides now actually hurt my heart.

Puking

Take, for instance, the final sequence of the film, as Roy mounts this incredible comeback against the same man who stole his hand and (in Roy?s misguided interpretation of past events) his entire life. Except, as you think that he?s poised to win the million dollars and renew his career as a professional bowler, Ernie McCracken once again rips Roy?s dreams and success away from him, but this time it?s in front of a huge crowd and millions of people at home. And in this scenario, Big Ern is everything that we hate rolled up into one horrible combover, as he taunts and gyrates in Roy?s face, before throwing his rubber hand into the crowd.

Big Ern Celebrating

Watching Roy just sit there and take it as people celebrate his second demise is gut-wrenching, even as he?s the last man left in the building. Add to it the fact that both Ishmael and Claudia apparently deserted him, and his life is as empty as it has ever been. Can it get worse? Yes, because Stanley and his henchman still come after him when Claudia leaves them, and Roy gets a literal gut punch this time to go along with the lifetime of figurative ones that he?d been taking.

With that, Kingpin is a film that today taught me:

  1. Life is about decisions, and the more bad decisions that we make, the deeper we dig ourselves into a hole that we simply cannot climb out of.
  2. But there is an alternative to digging. Instead of trying to change the past, we can take what we have and build a ladder to climb out and start over. Sure, we?ll be dirty and have nothing left to hang our hats on, but it?s better than being in a hole.
  3. If you make the right decisions, good things will happen. Roy decided to get clean and focus on being a better person, and he received $500,000 from Trojan to be the Rubber Man. Meanwhile, Claudia came back to him so she could change her life as well, and together they gave the half million to Ishmael?s family to save the farm, because their personal faults almost destroyed who he was, too.
  4. Bill Murray is still the funniest man on the face of the planet.

Movie lines don?t get much better than: ?It?s a small world when you?ve got unbelievable tits, Roy.?

Some leftover thoughts:

    • Some people will say Dumb & Dumber, some will say There?s Something About Mary. Some might even say Me, Myself & Irene. I still think Kingpin is the best Farrelly brothers movie, although I wouldn?t argue any of the others. I would, however, ask where it all went wrong. I say it was Shallow Hal, because I hated that movie.
    • In 1996, Bill Murray starred in Kingpin, Space Jam and Larger Than Life, which was a film about a salesman who inherited an elephant. I?m not saying that 1996 was Murray?s greatest year, but it was certainly up there.
    • I have never understood why Vanessa Angel didn?t have a better career. She?s incredibly beautiful and definitely wasn?t ever the worst actress. I mean, if Denise Richards could have a successful career as a leading lady for a few years, Angel should have at least had more of a chance. I blame Dan Aykroyd for pretending like a hot Russian soldier would have wanted to be with him after he and Chevy Chase saved the world in Spies Like Us.

Vanessa Angel

    • Randy Quaid?s IMDB page is a horrifying thing. Don?t take crazy pills, kids.

Urinal pooping

  • Is Kingpin the greatest bowling movie ever made? There are certainly slim pickings in the genre, but I only ask because we also have to ask if The Big Lebowski qualifies as a bowling film, as some people believe it does. Also, I don?t think I can make any specific decision without seeing the Canadian horror film Gutterballs, which seems to be about human heads being used as bowling balls.

Final Grade: 5 rose bowling balls out of 5, because I always wanted to own one of these balls.

Rose ball

Also, this song is still on my iPod to this day, because I hate being an adult:

Mayor: Cleveland suspect 'idolized' local serial killer

Three bodies have been discovered in East Cleveland, Ohio, police say, and a man is in custody in connection with the case.

"We are dealing with a sick individual, and we have reason to believe that there might be more victims," East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton told CNN.

All three victims appear to be young black women, their decomposing bodies wrapped in layers of plastic and taped up, according to authorities.

Two bodies were found Saturday, one in the basement of an abandoned house, the other in a field nearby. The first victim was found Friday in a garage on the same block after police received a call about a foul odor.

The first victim was found naked with indications of trauma, police say. The second victim was found wearing a green hoodie, and the third was wearing a leopard print leotard.

The garage where the first victim was found was leased to Michael Madison, according to Detective Sgt. Scott Gardner with the East Cleveland police.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for Madison's apartment and found "additional evidence of decomposition" there, he said.

The 35-year-old suspect was later located and taken into custody without incident after a standoff at his mother's house.

According to police, Madison was convicted of attempted rape in 2001 and is a registered sex offender.

CNN could not immediately reach a representative for Madison.

Yoga Practice While On Business Travel | Serenity Yoga

yoga-biz-travelTraveling, whether it?s for business or pleasure can throw off your daily routine. If you have even been on a diet, chances are, when you are out and about in a foreign country, you tend to throw caution in the air and indulge in local cuisines. Sounds familiar?

Fitness regimens can also be disrupted when you are on the road. This is especially true for business trips. Too often business trips are fraught with stressful and frantic energy, which can disrupt not only your yoga practice but more importantly your inner balance.

However, instead of viewing these business trips as a major disruption to your yoga practice, how about you recognize it as a perfect opportunity to actually practice yoga. In the previous articles I have discussed about performing yoga in the office, so now, let us look into the possibility of incorporating your yoga practice while on a business trips.

You will find out that sticking to your yoga routine actually makes a lot of sense. If you want to be in your ?peak? state while you interact and transact business, here are some ideas on how you can continue your yoga practice while away from home:

Get Some ?Me? Time

Instead of having to contend with chores, bills and other daily living obligations when you come home, staying at a hotel gives you that seemingly elusive ?me? time.? For many people, they choose to simply relish the luxurious feel of the hotel sheets and watch TV. Why not use this time to focus on your yoga practice and enjoy 30- or even 60-minute routine without any interruptions.

The Perfect Quiet Space

If you have kids around the house, then you are probably familiar of the fact that some peace and quiet in the home can be a luxury. Instead of watching TV, maximize your time by finding that quite space to go through your yoga routine.

Relieve The Usual Aches And Pains Of Travel

Traveling, whether by land or by plane can take its toll on the body. The busy schedules, heavy luggage, cramped space and stress can produce some familiar aches and pains. Your yoga practice presents the best way to loosen up and wind down after a hectic day. For those who have trouble sleeping in an unfamiliar environment, there are certain yoga poses that can promote better sleep.

Check Out Yoga DVDs and Yoga Online Videos

I have talked to a lot of people who seem to act like a fish out the water when they are away from their comfort zone. Instead of the usual excuses like I don?t have a yoga mat or I can?t memorize my yoga sequence, go ahead and check out online yoga videos and DVDs! You will be surprised to find out there are non-traditional ways of advancing your yoga practice beyond your home and outside your yoga class.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Watch Florence Welch join a London cover band to sing ?Get Lucky? after imbibing a bit too much liquid courage

Sometimes it?s nice to know that even enormously successful singers have their follies. Sourberry, the cover band at the South London Pacific, a tiki bar in Kennington, was warming up for its set when Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine hopped up on stage to sing a few songs. The band was playing a version of Daft Punk?s ?Get Lucky,? but Welch only managed to get out about half of the words while mumbling the rest, allegedly thanks to the double-edged sword of too many tequila shots. She stuck around to sing The Gossip?s ?In The Way Of Control? as well, then crowd-surfed away into the night. So the next time someone butchers ?Dog Days Are Over? at karaoke, just know that it?s been worse.

Pope Francis makes 1st international trip, returning to warm embrace of Latin America

RIO DE JANEIRO - Pope Francis has returned to the warm embrace of Latin America, landing in Brazil to begin his first international trip as pontiff.

Carrying his own hand luggage, Francis flew from Rome to Rio on a no-frills commercial airliner that was specially booked for him.

It's the first time the Argentine-born Francis has returned to his home continent since his selection as pope in March.

Waiting for him are 350,000 young Roman Catholics from 175 nations who are already in Rio for World Youth Day.

Francis arrives at a tough time for the church in Latin America, where it's losing faithful to rival churches and secularism.

A new poll says just 57 per cent of Brazilians aged 16 and older call themselves Catholics, the lowest recorded level.

Baseball: Slammers rally, hold off Miners

Baseball at Silver Cross Field on Saturday started with a daytime camp for school-age pitchers and catchers, many with big league dreams.

It continued at night with a Frontier League game between the Joliet Slammers and Southern Illinois Miners, older players with the same major league aspirations.

The first inning, though, was a nightmare for Slammers starter Shawn Kale as the first five Miners reached base in a four-run inning.

But Kale settled down, Joliet rallied to go ahead 5-4 and 7-5 and held on for a 7-6 win to clinch its fifth series victory in the last six.

?That?s been the mindset, believing that we can come from behind and win games,?? said first baseman Kyle Maunus, in his third season with the team.

The Slammers (24-29) are within five games of the .500 mark for the first time since June 19 when they were 12-17.

?We?ve just got to keep playing good baseball,?? manager Mike Breyman said. ?Tonight we kind of stole one.??

Nick Akins? team-leading ninth home run put the Slammers ahead 6-5 in the fifth inning.

Newcomer Joe Meggs had an RBI single to drive in Maunus (walk) for a 7-6 lead. Meggs is a rookie outfielder out of the University of Washington who was signed Friday.

?It was back and forth and every run is important in those games,?? Meggs said. ?I was just trying to hit something hard up the middle. You want to help the team any way you can, especially early on.??

The Slammers used six pitchers?Kale, Mike Barsotti, Lucas Goodgion, Chase Doremus, Brett Zawacki and closer Justin Erasmus in the ninth for his 13th save.

?I found a way to get out of the first, just keep battling and put up zeros,?? Kale said. ?Some of the guys definitely picked me up in the dugout, Maunus and (David) Christensen.

(Catcher) Ben Hewett did a great job. He kept me in there. He was picking me up.??

The Slammers sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and went ahead 5-4 on two hits, four walks, a hit batter and an error.

?Good at-bats, we worked the counts,?? Breyman said.

Akins doubled to score Niko Vasquez (base hit), Maunus hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Marquis Riley (walk) and Akins scored when Nate Wilder reached on an error. Wilder and Hewett both scored on bases-loaded walks to give Joliet a 5-4 lead.

?We told Kale after that big inning nothing was really hit that hard,?? Maunus said. ?We?ll come back. Just keep us in this ballgame. We?ll scratch a few across.??

?Kale could have went back out there and folded,?? Breyman said. ?After that first inning, he settled in and got his five innings.??

Rookie right-hander Matt Dillon (1-1, 2.38 ERA), from Mount Olive College in North Carolina, will start for the Slammers in the series finale at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.

Japan votes in parliamentary elections

Voters in Japan have begun casting ballots in a key poll for half of the seats in the country's upper house of parliament.

Polling began at 7:00am local time on Sunday (22:00 GMT on Saturday), and?are expected to close at 8:00pm (11:00 GMT). Final results will be known late on Sunday or early Monday.

"I want to see a stable government. That's the Liberal Democratic Party," said 76-year-old Hiroshi Miyamoto, after casting his ballot for Abe's pro-business, conservative party in the western Tokyo suburb of Hachioji.

Voter turnout stood at 13.73 percent as of 11:00am local time (02:00 GMT).

With approval ratings well over 60 percent seven months after he took office as prime minister, Shinzo Abe's ruling party is expecting to further strengthen its grip on power.

Half of the upper legislative chamber's 242 seats are up for grabs, in what is expected to be the last national election for three years.

Economic reforms

Control of both chambers will remove political obstacles to Abe's agenda, which includes pushing through reforms to tackle the country's underperforming economy.

They point to the need for reform of the labour market to make it easier for firms to hire and fire workers, participation in a huge free trade pact and a rise in consumption tax, which economists say will help to slow the pace of growth in the already sky-high national debt.

The reforms are the third instalment of an economic policy plan dubbed "Abenomics" that has already seen a slew of government spending and a flood of easy money from the central bank.

Those moves pushed the value of the yen down and sent the stock market soaring, bringing cheer to some sectors of corporate Japan.

However, Abe's detractors say Abenomics is a ruse, part of a tactical power grab that will see the PM return to his conservative social agenda once he has control over both houses of parliament.

They fear this will mean a loosening of Japan's constitutional commitment to pacifism, a boosting of the military and a more strident tone in already-strained relations with China and South Korea, both of which have territorial disputes with Tokyo.

Whatever Abe's intentions, the predicted swing towards his Liberal Democratic Party and their junior coalition allies could give Japan its first long-term prime minister since Junichiro Koizumi, who ruled for the first half of last decade.

Red Sox open second half with 4-2 win over Yanks

BOSTON (AP) ? Jacoby Ellsbury and Johnny Gomes homered, and Felix Doubront outpitched Andy Pettitte on Friday night to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the depleted New York Yankees in the opener of their three-game series.

Ellsbury homered on Pettitte's second pitch of the game, and Gomes made it 3-0 in the second.

Doubront (7-3) held a Yankees lineup without Derek Jeter and a handful of other regulars hitless until Lyle Overbay doubled to lead off the fifth inning.

In all, the Red Sox left-hander gave up two runs ? one earned ? and three hits and three walks while striking out five in 6 1-3 innings. It was the 12th consecutive start in which Doubront has allowed three or fewer earned runs.

Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Pettitte (7-7) gave up four runs on six hits and a walk, striking out four in 6 1-3 innings.

The Yankees made their first visit to Fenway Park this season for the first game after the break, and Robinson Cano played three days after being hit on the knee by a pitch in the All-Star game. But the lineup barely resembled the team New Yorkers thought would be wearing pinstripes at this point in the season.

Jeter was placed on the disabled list before the game ? he's spent all but one game there this season ? and the Yankees are also missing third baseman Alex Rodriguez, first baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist surgery), outfielder Curtis Granderson (broken pinkie) and catcher Francisco Cervelli (broken hand).

The lineup was further depleted when left fielder Zoilo Almonte came out of the game in the fifth inning with a left ankle sprain; X-rays were negative.

And center fielder Brett Gardner took himself out when, after being called out on a 3-2 pitch to end the top of the fifth, he slammed his helmet on the ground and was ejected by home plate umpire Mike Everitt.

That left the Yankees ill-equipped to come back after Boston took a 3-0 lead on the homers.

New York made it 3-1 when Gardner walked, stole second and scored when he stole third and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia's throw went into left field. Chris Stewart doubled home Overbay in the fifth to cut the deficit to one run.

The Red Sox added a run in the seventh, then Ichiro Suzuki singled over the shortstop's glove and Cano doubled to put runners on second and third with one out in the eighth.

But Craig Breslow got Vernon Wells to fly out weakly to short and Luis Cruz grounded to shortstop; Jose Iglesias' throw pulled first baseman Mike Napoli off the bag, but he made the tag for the third out.

Notes: The Red Sox played "New York, New York" to thank the city for the support in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings. ... The Yankees put Jeter on the disabled list before the game with a strained right quadriceps. ... The Yankees signed INF Brent Lillibridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. ... Pettitte had allowed just 19 hits in 100 at-bats against lefties coming into the game before Ellsbury hit a leadoff homer. It was the third homer against him by a lefty in his last four starts. ... Boston OF Shane Victorino left the game with left hamstring tightness. ... It was the latest the Yankees have played their first game of the season at Fenway, except for the strike-shortened season of 1981. ... The Red Sox placed RHP Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 13) with a right shoulder strain.
