An Interaction Designer Creates a Tactile Comic Book For the Blind

Comic books and visual novels are difficult to translate into Braille; Usually, they?re novelized or retold in audio formats. But is it possible to tell a visual story using tactile means alone? A Berlin-based interaction design student named Philipp Meyer thinks so.

Working with a blind collaborator named Michael and NOTA, a Copenhagen-based institute for the blind, Meyer spent six months prototyping and testing a tactile graphic novel that?s completely without text. ?I saw it as a challenge and a chance to fathom the possibilities of tactile storytelling,? he explains. ?My goal was to create a story that is equally explorable for people with and without eyesight.?

Meyer?s book is called Life, and it tells the (heart-crushingly) simple story of, well, life. Using a Braille printer and a system of geometric shapes, the book tells the tale of the birth, life, and death of its hero in a few short pages. It?s a simple project, but it took months to refine the concept with the help of a handful of blind readers and the technical assistance of NOTA. And Meyer is quick to note that he doesn't see Life as an alternative to Braille?it?s an experiment, plain and simple. ?I want to point out that I don't know if this is the best or only way to create a tactile comic and if this comic works for every blind reader,? he explains. ?It's an experiment inspired by the interviews with Michael and the feedback I got from him and the other readers.?

It?s fairly rare that design students and challenged to think about how their work could be leveraged by disabled users?but as we?ve seen with smartphones, the effects can be life-changing. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A drop in government spending dragged more on the U.S. economy than initially thought in the first three months of the year, although consumer spending looked relatively resilient to Washington's austerity drive.

Other reports on Thursday showed the number of new jobless claims rose modestly last week while contracts on previously owned homes climbed to a three-year high in April.

Together, the reports pointed to an economy that has held up reasonably well despite government constraints, but nevertheless faced headwinds severe enough to dissuade the U.S. Federal Reserve from trimming its monetary stimulus in the immediate future.

"(The reports) paint the picture of an economy with strengthening fundamentals that is facing significant fiscal drag," said Ellen Zentner, an economist at Nomura in New York.

Gross domestic product, a measure of the country's total economic output, expanded at a 2.4 percent annual rate during the first quarter, down a tenth of a point from an initial estimate, the Commerce Department said.

Analysts had forecast a 2.5 percent gain.

Government spending tumbled at a 4.9 percent annual rate, which was faster than the 4.1 percent rate initially estimated. Also holding back growth during the quarter, businesses outside the farm sector stocked their shelves at a slower pace.

Washington has been tightening its belt for several years but ramped up austerity measures in 2013, hiking taxes in January and slashing the federal budget in March.

"We are dramatically under-spending in Washington," said Michael Strauss, a market strategist at Commonfund in Wilton, Connecticut.

U.S. stocks rose and the dollar weakened as some investors bet the data could dissuade the Fed from rushing to taper a bond buying program that has acted as a bulwark against government belt tightening. Prices for U.S. government debt pared losses.

Despite the signs of a substantial fiscal drag, the GDP report also highlighted a resilience that has surprised many economists.

Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity. rose at a 3.4 percent annual rate, up two tenths of a point from the government's previous estimate.

Excluding the volatile inventories component, GDP rose at an upwardly revised 1.8 percent rate, slightly higher than analysts had forecast. This suggests that an improvement in hiring and incomes over the last year has helped keep economic momentum intact.

"(It's) steady as she goes," said Stephen Stanley, an economist at Pierpont Securities in Stamford, Connecticut

HOUSING RECOVERY

Most economists still expect economic growth will slow around the middle of 2013 as budget cuts are enacted. But growth is seen picking up by year end, propelled by consumer spending and an apparently entrenched housing market recovery.

In April, the National Association of Realtors' index of signed contracts for home resales rose 0.3 percent to 106.0, the highest reading since April 2010.

The housing market recovery is being driven by the Fed's very easy monetary policy stance, which has kept mortgage rates low. Although speculation the Fed could begin to curtail its bond buying within a few months has driven mortgage rates sharply higher in recent days, economists say the fundamentals of the housing recovery still appear strong.

A separate report showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, but not enough to suggest a shift in the recent pattern of steady job gains.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 354,000, above analysts' expectations, Labor Department data showed.

So, as many people learned for the first time Wednesday, the venerable host of the long-running "Inside the Actors Studio" was, for about a year, a pimp in post-WWII Paris.

OK, so maybe not a "pimp," per se. James Lipton sat down with Matt Lauer on Thursday to talk the semantics of prostitution-related jobs -- and about "Studio," which aired its 250th episode Wednesday night.

"A 'pimp' is an American word," he said. Instead, he noted, in France the term is 'mec,' and "the difference between a pimp and a 'mec' is profound," he added.

As he explained, "A pimp exploits and often abuses his women. And it's just the reverse with a 'mec.' A 'mec' works for his women."

Also, he noted, at the time he was "very young," it was just after the war and employment was virtually impossible to come by -- for French and foreigners alike. He wanted to stay in France, and this was how he made that happen -- legally, as prostitution was regulated in the country.

Lauer seemed genuinely shocked, claiming he'd never heard this in all the 20 years they'd been friends. Lipton reminded him that he'd talked all about it in his memoir, "Inside 'Inside,'" which published in 2007. "I'm shocked, shocked that everyone is shocked, shocked!" he laughed.

But it wasn't all about the old days -- Lipton talked about one of the greatest moments he'd ever had on "Studio," which was when Bradley Cooper sat down with him for an interview. "I was his dean, he was my student," said Lipton. "He was the first of our graduated students to come back and sit next to me on my show and the two of us burst into tears and we had to stop (filming) before we could continue."

The man loves his work.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A trade panel that specializes in patent cases will reconsider a split decision made by one of its judges in a long-running patent battle between Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc.

The International Trade Commission said late Tuesday it would take a second look at an ITC judge's decision that Samsung had infringed one Apple patent for a text-selection feature in its smartphones and tablets.

It will also look at the judge's decision, made in March, that the South Korean company, which supplies some Apple chips, did not infringe a second patent which detects if a microphone or other device is plugged into its microphone jack.

A final decision is due on August 1.

The ITC is a popular venue for patent battles because it can ban imported goods from the United States if they are found to infringe patents.

Apple had filed a complaint in mid-2011, accusing Samsung of infringing its patents in making its Galaxy, Transform and Nexus mobile devices, among others.

The case at the International Trade Commission is No. 337-796.

Whiteface Mountain spokesman Jon Lundin says 36 inches of white powder has blanketed the nearly 5,000-foot tall mountain in the Adirondacks. That has forced the Olympic Regional Development Authority to close Whiteface Veteran's Memorial Highway on the backside of the mountain.

Lundin says the?snow?began lightly falling Saturday and steadily dropped Sunday, finishing in the evening. He didn't know if the 3-foot snowfall was a record for Whiteface.

Burlington, Vt., National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Muccilli says the mountain experienced steady?snowand gusty winds throughout the weekend.

He says Mount Mansfield, in Stowe, Vt., had 13.2 inches of?snow?Sunday, the latest in the season it's ever had a foot.

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana ? The apartment rental business in Indiana University's hometown appears to be going strong.

The annual market update to the Monroe County Apartment Association puts the Bloomington apartment rental rate at 96.6 percent for last year. That's higher than Indianapolis at 93 percent and nearby Columbus at 95 percent, The Herald-Times (http://bit.ly/Zqr8ed ) reported Tuesday.

The city's apartment market has been helped by the steady student enrollment at IU's main campus and local population growth of about 3 percent since 2010, said Dane Wilson, a senior associate for real estate developer CBRE Group Inc.

"The past four years have been really exciting, with record growth year-over-year," Wilson said. "The most important figure is that you've maintained total enrollment over 42,000."

Bloomington's average monthly apartment rent was $892 last year, up nearly $60 since 2010, according to the market report.

Steve LaMotte, co-leader of CBRE's Indianapolis-Cincinnati Multi-Housing Group, said Bloomington was traditionally the strongest-performing market in his group's territory, which covers markets in parts of Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Despite the high occupancy rates and increasing rents, LaMotte said he didn't expect an apartment construction boom in Bloomington.

"It's historically been very, very difficult to build and very difficult for outsiders to get in," LaMotte said. "You don't take kindly to those that come in from out of the market and want to throw up 250-unit, 600-bed apartment properties. It's a painful process."

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyan agricultural firm Rea Vipingo posted a 7 percent drop in first-half pretax profit to 281 million shillings due to a jump in its cost of sales, it said on Monday.

The sisal producer said it expected prices and sales to remain at "satisfactory levels" in the remainder of its financial year ending September.

It blamed rising costs at its Tanzanian estates for driving its cost of sales for the six months ended March to 667 million shillings from 637 million the year before.

Earnings per share dropped to 3.18 shillings from 3.47 shillings, it added.

"The continued unreliable grid power supply situation continues to contribute to higher energy costs as we are forced to use diesel generators for extended periods," the company said in a statement.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) ? Fox Sports says on Monday it still had not determined why an overhead TV camera cable snapped during the Coca-Cola 600.

The network says a full investigation is under way and use of the camera is suspended indefinitely. Earlier, NASCAR said it would wait for Fox Sports to conclude its review before deciding if such technology would be used in the future.

Charlotte Motor Speedway said 10 people were injured when part of the drive rope landed in the grandstand; three were taken to hospitals. All were checked out and released soon after.

Several drivers, including then-leader Kyle Busch, reported damage to their cars from the rope.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp told The Associated Press on Monday that there were no plans to use the system at upcoming races "so we'll have ample time to review."

The network said the system was provided by Austrian company CAMCAT. The rope that failed was certified for a breaking strength of 9,300 pounds and was only bearing less than 900 pounds of force during the race, according to Fox Sports.

The network said it's reviewing with CAMCAT equipment maintenance records, history and installation information and plans to share its findings with NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The network said the system was used successfully at the Daytona 500 and was set up and working at last week's Sprint All-Star race in Charlotte. Fox's final NASCAR telecast this year comes Sunday at Dover International Speedway.

Tharp said NASCAR would let the network determine what went wrong.

"We'll sync up with them on what they have learned this week and go from there," he said.

The network explained how the drive rope moves the camera back and forth and failed near its turn one connection. The camera, it said in a statement, did not come down "because the guide ropes acted as designed."

The rope, Fox said, was made of Dyneema, which it described as "an ultra-strong synthetic that has the same approximate strength of a steel wire with the same diameter." It said the rope was less than a year old, had been factory-tested by its manufacturer and its breaking strength was certified before shipment. The rope was also inspected by CAMCAT when it was received last June.

According to OnlineRopes.com, Dyneema has the "highest strength-to-weight ratio of any manmade material in the world. On weight-to-weight base, it is up to 15 times stronger than steel."

The pictures such cameras provide can be extraordinary. But in this case, the failure brought confusion and chaos to the racers and the fans.

Coca-Cola 600 winner Kevin Harvick thought he was imagining things when he noticed the black rope on the track. He was among the lucky ones who escaped without damage. Busch said he heard a "thunk" when he ran over it and knew he'd have problems.

Busch used a cellphone to take a picture of the mangled metal around his front, right-side wheel so his team could figure out how to repair the damage.

Marcos Ambrose dragged a piece of the rope that got caught up in his car behind him on the track. Mark Martin also reported problems after driving over the rope.

NASCAR red-flagged the race for about 30 minutes and allowed teams back to their pits to get their cars back to race trim.

NASCAR first threw a caution flag before two red flags came out. It eventually allowed the cars to come into the pits, giving crews 15 minutes to work on their cars.

During the break, Busch's crew frantically worked to repair several problems to the right front wheel well. After completing repairs, the crew slapped high-fives as the car rolled back on the track.

Busch remained competitive and was running in the top five at the midpoint of the race. But his night ended in frustration when his engine blew up on lap 253. He said the engine problem was not related the rope damage. He thanked NASCAR for how it handled the unique stoppage.

"I commend NASCAR for taking the initiative and letting us repair our damaged cars from the issue we had," Busch said.

Busch said he never saw the nylon rope.

Ambrose wound up ninth behind Harvick, the second top-10 finish of the year for the Richard Petty Motorsports team.

Kasey Kahne led 156 laps, most of the night, and was second to Harvick. He was as bewildered as everyone else with the TV cable across the track.

"I've never seen anything like it," he said. "I came around turn four, saw it wrapped around Kyle's car, hit mine. I thought I was seeing things."

The camera hung in place over the large painted logo on the grass between the start-finish line and pit road.

Fox broadcaster Chris Myers apologized during the telecast several times to fans, drivers and race teams for the disruption. The network's statement offered "a sincere 'thank you' to the staff at CMS for attending to the injuries and keep us informed on this developing situation."

Busch wasn't sure anybody had seen that happen before and offered a solution: "Maybe now we can rid of that thing."

Memory problems are a common complaint of women going through menopause, and now a new study provides more evidence linking mood and hot flashes to loss of memory abilities during menopause.

Researchers found that women who felt their memory wasn't functioning well scored lower in a series of psychological tests of attention and memory. The women's cognitive performance was still within the normal range, but their ratings of their own memory abilities lined up with how well they performed in the tests.

The study also revealed links between memory abilities and mood, and the severity of menopause symptoms. Women who reported more negative emotions did worse on the tests than women who had felt less negative. Similarly, women who experienced severe hot flashes did worse on the tests, compared to women who had fewer hot flashes.

"The good news for women is that there's proof that their perception about their performance is real," said Dr. Margery Gass, the executive director for The North American Menopause Society and a gynecologist at Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study.

In the study, researchers gave eight tests of attention and memory to 68 women, ages 44 to 62, who experienced moderate to severe hot flashes. The women also completed questionnaires about their menopause symptoms, mood and memory.

It's most likely that memory abilities will return to the norm after the menopause transition. But in the meantime, there are ways to ease the problem, Gass said. For example, it might help to address problems such as anxiety and depression and pay attention to sleep quality.

"Women should become proactive, make notes and lists, and make use of the little tricks that helps us perform better," she said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Internal Affairs officers on Saturday were looking into allegations made by actress Amanda Bynes that New York Police Department officers sexually assaulted her when she was charged with heaving a marijuana bong out the window of her 36th-floor Manhattan apartment.

The 27-year-old former child star first alleged during her arraignment on Friday that police illegally entered her apartment after being called to her midtown building. But in a Twitter message believed to be from the troubled actress posted Saturday, Bynes alleged that her arresting officer also sexually assaulted her.

"As it would with any such allegation, regardless of its credibility, IAB is investigating it," said the NYPD's chief spokesman, Paul Browne, referring to the internal affairs bureau.

The Twitter handle used to make the sexual assault allegations Saturday does not appear to be verified by the social network? but Bynes' friend, former Hollywood publicist Jonathan Jaxson, said Saturday the tweet was made from Bynes' account. Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment.

In court on Friday, the former "Hairspray" star made no mention of the sexual assault allegations, though she did complain of illegal entry to her apartment. She's been charged with reckless endangerment, attempted tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because of an ongoing investigation said the building manager was with officers at Bynes' apartment when they arrived Thursday night. The official said officers were kept waiting approximately five minutes before she opened the door to them. The same official said the building manager told internal affair investigators nothing untoward happened.

Bynes was released by Chief New York County Judge Neil Ross on her own recognizance because, Ross said, he did not believe her to be a flight risk. But in releasing her, Ross also issued a stern warning to Bynes, telling her not to get rearrested or miss any court dates. She's due back in court on July 9.

Attempts to reach Bynes' arraignment lawyer were unsuccessful Saturday evening.

Bynes rose to fame starring in Nickelodeon's "All That" and has also starred in several films, including 2010's "Easy A." But she has been in the news more recently because of several scrapes with the law and bizarre public behavior.

Bynes was arrested Thursday night after building officials called police to complain she was rolling a joint and smoking pot in the lobby. The officers went to her apartment where they saw heavy smoke and a bong sitting on the kitchen counter. They said she tossed the bong out the window in front of them, prosecutors said Friday.

Stephen Strasburg dominated over eight innings to earn his third win.

Game in a nutshell: The highly anticipated Stephen Strasburg vs. Cole Hamels matchup lived up to the billing, with each ace carrying a shutout into the seventh. That's when Strasburg turned things up a notch and Hamels fell back to earth. Strasburg struck out the side in the top of the seventh, then watched as his teammates ambushed Hamels for five runs in the bottom of the inning. That was way more run support than Strasburg needed, enough that manager Davey Johnson didn't need to push his right-hander beyond 112 pitches and let Tyler Clippard close out the ninth. One negative development for the Nationals, though: Bryce Harper's knee (already banged up from his collision with the wall in Los Angeles almost two weeks ago) was barking so badly he had to be pulled for a pinch-runner in the seventh.

Hitting highlight: It was turning into yet another maddeningly frustrating day at the plate for the Nationals, who couldn't get another going against Hamels for six innings. And then, they exploded for five runs in the seventh. OK, so maybe it wasn't a conventional offensive explosion, but it worked. It featured a Ryan Zimmerman infield single, an Ian Desmond sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk to Tyler Moore, a 60-foot nubber off Jhonatan Solano's bat that somehow scored two runs, a Steve Lombardozzi base hit that became a triple thanks to Delmon Young's adventures in right field and a Denard Span RBI double to cap it all off. So what if it wasn't a thing of beauty? The way the Nationals have struggled to score runs all season, this was certainly welcome.

Pitching highlight: What more can you say about Strasburg? He was absolutely brilliant, with total command of all three of his pitches. The big weapon today was his curveball, which was as sharp as it's been all season. He also got stronger as the game progressed, retiring 15 of 16 batters during one stretch, nine of them on strikeouts. He also stayed efficient enough to take the mound for the eighth inning for the second time in 15 days (this after never reaching the eighth in the first 53 starts of his career). It wasn't all perfect for Strasburg, though. Just when it looked like he'd finish off eight shutout innings, he was called for a balk with a man on third and two outs in the eighth. A very small blemish in an otherwise spectacular performance.

Key stat: Hamels has not pitched with the Phillies holding a lead since April 7.

Up next: It's time for the annual Battle of the Beltways interleague showdown, but there's a new twist this season. The Nationals and Orioles will play four straight days in two cities (Monday and Tuesday in D.C., Wednesday and Thursday in Baltimore). It all begins at 1:05 p.m. Monday when Gio Gonzalez faces Jason Hammel at Nationals Park.

(Reuters) - Tornadoes that struck the United States from May 18 to May 20 caused anywhere from $2 billion to $5 billion in insured losses, disaster modeling company Eqecat said.

The firm said most of the losses were attributed to the tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma, last Monday.

Eqecat said some 76 tornadoes struck across 10 states over a three-day span. The worst of it was in Moore, where the firm said about 13,000 structures were damaged.

At the high end of the range, the outbreak may end up ranking as the second worst ever in terms of insured losses, behind only the late-April 2011 tornadoes that devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and other communities.

With the release of iOS7 just around the corner, clamor over the changes Jony Ive will institute is growing. The general consensus?on this site and elsewhere?is that Apple is about to get a flat makeover. But for the uninitiated, ?flat design? can be a confusing term. So let?s talk it out, shall we?

Flat design is shorthand for a design philosophy...

Think about your computer?s desktop. Or your iPhone?s calculator. Or your iPad?s newstand. Those things are designed to sound, and more importantly look, just like the real-life analogues they?re named after. Do we really need all of those visual cues and extra details? People who advocate for flat design don?t think so.

?that argues for simplicity, clarity, and honesty of materials in user interfaces...

Instead, flat advocates (flatvocates?) argue that GUIs?graphical user interfaces?should eschew style for functionality. That means getting rid of beveled edges, gradients, shadows, and reflections, as well as creating a user experience that plays to the strengths of digital interfaces, rather than limiting the user to the confines of the familiar analog world. In web design as well, "flat" pages rarely introduce dimensionality, shadows, or textures into the equation, relying instead on parallax scrolling and visual clarity to communicate.

A great example of flat design is Google Now, which uses a card-like system to display information brackets. Rather than ghettoizing information inside of static icons, Now displays data on a standard-sized card that's easy to read and easy to swipe away. Another example? Windows 8, descended from Microsoft's Metro design language, which values typography?or the delivery of information?over graphics that help the user understand what type of content they're reading.

To understand flat design, you have to understand the thing it?s revolting against: skeuomorphism. Skeuomorphism boils down to visual trickery, or the use of details and ornamentation to make one thing look like another. In architecture, false facades are skeuomorphic. In car design, fake wood panelling is. Skeuomorphism in UI design usually refers to a digital element designed to look like something from the physical world. That can mean anything from Pinterest?s ?pin board? to the rich leather stitching that boarders Find My Friends.

Skeuomorphism in digital space dates back to Apple?s first consumer GUI, from 1984, which introduced the concept of a ?desktop? and icons that looked like folders and pieces of paper. Back then computer interfaces were a totally foreign concept to most users, which made skeuomorphism a valuable tool. It let designers create visual metaphors between old, familiar objects (a manilla file folder) and a new, confusing tool (a digital file). Skeuomorphs helped us learn.

But as personal computers became ubiquitous, fewer and fewer people needed those visual cues to understand the function of an icon or button. Skeuomorphism became an overwrought style?a kind of digital Potemkin that cluttered screens and overburdened the user with unnecessary details. And so it became a pariah for a new generation of designers?most of whom don?t remember a world without computers.

This should all sound pretty familiar. Modernists have argued these same basic ideas since the turn of the last century: don?t add extraneous details that don?t support functionality. Do be honest about materials and structure. Don?t create a fake front just to make users feel safe. It?s the same basic war cry of every modern designer since Le Corbusier came screaming into the world. In a way, ?flat design? isn?t anything new?it?s just the contemporary shorthand for modernism with a capital ?M.?

And what?s after flat?

Though the world is definitely going flat, it won?t be flat forever. We can glean where UI and UX are going, after flat design runs its course, by looking at the last century?during which each wave of modernism revolted against the one that had came before. For example, after the strict modernism of the Bauhaus and the International Style took the world by storm in the 1930s, a second generation of designers introduced the concept of Critical Regionalism into the discussion, arguing that one-size-fits-all credo of early modernists was sort of... reductive. It?s likely that the same thing will happen with interface design. After radical flatness, we?ll probably see designers carefully reintroduce dimensionality where it?s really needed.

But that?s all a few years down the line. For now, we?ll wait and see whether Jony Ive takes the flat design bait, or if he revolts?in which case, things are about to get a lot more interesting.

A growing trend of young muslims traveling from the U.S. and Europe to Syria, as well as Africa, to train and fight alongside al-Qaeda is pushing Western intelligence agencies to heighten surveillance at airports, harbors and border crossings amid fears that these trained fighters will return home to launch terror attacks.

Those fears were highlighted Wednesday when two Islamic jihadists slaughtered a British soldier in the streets of London and the recent bombings at the Boston Marathon by Chechen born Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan. These terrorist attacks have left investigators - on both sides of the Atlantic - with more questions than answers. Were these groups acting alone or were they following orders from al-Qaeda central, or one of its fringe groups?

Officials fear jihadists from U.S., Europe fighting alongside al-Qaeda in Syria

One thing is certain: this will not be the end of these seemingly random and difficult to predict terror attacks, say U.S. officials. And with the war escalating in Syria and Islamic extremists groups gaining momentum in Africa, Western law enforcement will have to contend with more trained fighters returning from these war zones to the U.S. and other European nations.

"We know young men are leaving London, U.S. and other parts of Europe with medical bags, tactical gear and other supplies to Syria, and some are heading to Africa to fight in places like Somalia, Algeria and Mali," said a Western official, with direct knowledge of the terror investigations. "Unfortunately, the rebel groups they are fighting with have strong ties to al-Qaeda and other extremist groups. This is where they will be indoctrinated - what happens when they come home trained, ready to fight and hating the west?"

The problem is that many of these fighters are skilled enough not to be detected by law enforcement "and therefore slip through the cracks - Syria isn't the only country we're concerned with," the official added.

War on Terror

In President Obama's speech on Thursday, he narrowed the definition of the "war on terror" saying "beyond Afghanistan, we must define our effort not as a boundless 'global war on terror' - but rather as a series of persistent, targeted efforts to dismantle specific networks of violent extremists that threaten America."

Steven Bucci, a former a deputy assistant defense secretary under Donald Rumsfeld, said a major problem is that the Obama Administration downplays the seriousness of the threat.

The administration explains many of these incidents as "lone-wolf" actions and Obama's speech Thursday, reiterated the administration's inability to understand the capabilities of the enemy.

"He is totally delusional about "winding down the war," Bucci said. "I don't know if he noticed that the bad guys don't want to stop - think about London (Wednesday.)"

In London, one of the men, identified in British news reports as Adebolajo, told a bystander who witnessed the attacks that "he swears by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you," as he held a meat cleaver in his blood soaked hands.

The men hacked into the British soldier like a "piece of meat," stunned bystanders told the media. One bystander said one of the men told them, "the only reasons we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day. This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for tooth. ...You people will never be safe."

Muslim Jihadists Traveling to Syria

A U.S. military official, with direct knowledge of terror networks in Afghanistan and Africa, said military officials are aware of the growing trend of young Western Muslim jihadists traveling to the front lines in Syria and Africa.

"It is extremely concerning when these extremists eventually return home with skills that bring the battle zone to our front door and endanger our way of life," the military official said. "It's overseas where they gain the knowledge to build bombs, use weapons, connect with leaders in the jihadist movement. It's not a matter of if we'll see terror attacks at home but when."

Since 2008, ?FBI officials have been monitoring the travel of Somali men who have left the U.S. to fight alongside rebel forces in their former homeland. Some of these young fighters were used as suicide bombers, while others were taken under the wing of Somalia's al-Qaeda affiliate, Al-Shabaab Mujahideen.

FBI Spokeswoman Kathleen Wright acknowledged that law enforcement is aware of the threat, referring to testimony given to Congress by FBI Director Robert Mueller in March, where he explained why radicalization in the U.S. is more prevalent now than in the past.

?"First, American extremists appear to be attracted to wars in foreign countries," Mueller told a House Appropriations subcommittee.??"We have already seen a number of Americans travel overseas to train and fight with extremist groups. The?increase and availability of extremist propaganda in English perpetuates the problem."

In 2010, the FBI and DHS were closely monitoring the U.S. Mexico border when information that 23 Somalis, some with ties to Al-Shabaab, were plotting to illegally enter the United States after being mistakenly released from custody by Mexican officials, a confidential federal law enforcement report said.

U.S. officials don't have a number on how many young men may have left the U.S. to fight alongside Syrian rebel groups but in Europe hundreds of young men have gone to their homeland to fight, according to European intelligence officials and news reports from the region.

Recruiting Terrorists

Al-Qaeda groups work together in war zones overseas - sharing information and recruiting new members, according to U.S. Intelligence officials who spoke to The Blaze and Bucci.

Claims by Obama that al-Qaeda is "disseminated," gives power to the terrorists here at home and lowers the guard of Americans and Europeans who are the group's primary targets, Bucci said.

"To say al-Qaeda is diminished, and try to be so specific you have sound bites for it, is disingenuous," said Bucci, who is now director of the Douglas and Sarah Allison Center for Foreign Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation. "These AQ fringes work together in Mali, Libya, Algeria, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Iraq and make connections with followers all over the world. They are transnational terrorist groups who swap expertise and narratives."

"Every time they succeed in an attack, regardless of the regional venue, it makes their job more successful to radicalize people here."

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) ? Officials in Washington state performed a special inspection six months ago on the Interstate 5 bridge that collapsed because there were indications it had been struck by a different vehicle.

An inspection report released Friday by the state Department of Transportation says inspectors brought in a bucket truck to examine the structure and identified tears, deformations and gouges on the northbound side of the bridge.

The report says the special checkup was done due to "impact damage," although state officials did not respond to a phone call seeking more detail.

The inspection report also details a variety of other problems with the bridge, including vegetation growing in panels, and rust. It also summarizes a variety of parts on the bridge that have been subjected to "high-load" hits.

Between the faction of gay Christians who are happy with their sexual identity and "ex-gays," who say they've removed their homosexual yearnings, is a third group that gets little attention. These so-called Side B Christians identify as gay and believe it's not sinful to do so. But because they see acting on their orientation as ungodly, they commit to a life of celibacy.

Now, for the first time, a sociologist has taken an in-depth look at what makes Side Bs tick, particularly how they navigate their same-sex desires and their awkward position as stuck in the middle of ex-gay groups and content gay Christians. The study is small, but finds that Side Bs experience both tension and connection with these two groups. (The origins of the "Side B" term are foggy, but the terminology seems to come from the organization the Gay Christian Network, which labels gay Christians who do not see their sexuality as sinful as "Side A" and those who do as "Side B.")

"The networks overlap with these two groups very strongly, and they did often feel kind of caught in the middle, certainly," said study researcher S.J. Creek, a sociologist at Hollins University in Virginia. [5 Myths About Gay People, Debunked]

Christian and gay

The study of Side B Christians grew out of a larger research project by Creek looking into the lives of ex-gay Christians. This movement, which centers largely around the organization Exodus International, claims that same-sex desire can be stifled and that sexual orientation can be changed ? hence the term "ex-gay." Numbers on ex-gay individuals are hard to come by, but Exodus International claims 3,000 people worldwide attend one of its ministry events each week.

In interviewing people who had sought help from ex-gay groups and then left, Creek found two distinct groups: Side As, who reconciled their sexuality with their religion and believe being gay and Christian is not contradictory; and Side Bs, who accept their orientation but commit to celibacy in order to remain in line with anti-homosexuality tenets.

"How each group thought about and acted on desire was different," Creek said.

For her new study, published May 13 in the journal Symbolic Interaction, Creek interviewed five Side B Christians about their emotions and interactions. Four of the interviewees were men and one was a woman; one of the men was married to a lesbian who also struggled with her desires.

Dealing with desire

The interviews revealed that desire was a complex problem for the Side Bs. "Allen," the 30-something man married to a lesbian, noted that he'd even had gay friends try to seduce him to test his limits. Such an experience is not uncommon among abstinent people, Creek wrote. Admitting to same-sex desires is also a problem for Side Bs interacting with ex-gays, as the ex-gay philosophy holds that even homosexual desire is not OK. Creek's interviewees reported keeping their sexuality and their celibacy closeted in many cases.

"I tend to categorize myself as a gay, celibate Christian, but I am very hesitant using that [description] because in secular society, the word 'gay' means attracted to men, and in Evangelical Christian subculture, it means ?sleeps with everybody ?ve days a week,?" said one interviewee, called "James" in the report. Dealing with the connotations of the term was often too much of a headache, James said, so he frequently kept the information to himself.

At other times, claiming a gay identity was a way to connect with other Christians, both gay and straight. "Erin," a celibate lesbian, told Creek she found a connection with married couples in her Orthodox Church who also tried to lead chaste lives. Allen told a story of a straight Christian retreat administrator who stood up for him, pointing out that Christian straight men and Christian gay men have similar struggles.

"Every day, Allen wakes up and looks around, and he sees guys he wants to have sex with ? and he doesn't have sex with them because he's following Jesus," the male administrator said. "And every day, I wake up, and I see girls I want to have sex with ? and I don?t have sex with them because I?m following Jesus. So, we?re both not getting any because we?re following Jesus."

The study can?t be generalized to Christian gays as a group, or even to celibate Christian gays, Creek said. Nor can it answer the burning question of who is happier: ex-gays, Side As or Side Bs. ?

"Ex-gays are always telling people why gays are deeply unhappy. And many gay activists are going to tell you why ex-gay activists are deeply unhappy," Creek said. "Every group seems to think the other group isn't quite as happy as they are."

However, the Side B Christians interviewed by Creek may place a different priority on their sexuality than outsiders might, Creek said.

"Their Christian identities are incredibly important to them, and they would be deeply unhappy if they felt they were compromising those identities," she said.

May 23, 2013 ? Scientists at Emory Vaccine Center have shown that an immune regulatory molecule called IL-21 is needed for long-lasting antibody responses in mice against viral infections.

The results are published in the Journal of Virology.

"Our findings highlight how IL-21 could be important in the development of antiviral vaccines," says research associate Ata Ur Rasheed Mohammed, PhD, the first author of the paper. The senior author is Rafi Ahmed, PhD, director of the Emory Vaccine Center and a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar.

The findings could lead scientists designing future vaccines to incorporate IL-21 directly or to use the ability to stimulate IL-21 as a gauge of vaccine activity. IL-21 was discovered in 2000. Its effects have also been studied in the area of immune responses against HIV, and it has been in clinical trials for skin cancer and kidney cancer and auto-immune disorders.

A main objective of vaccination is to make the recipient's immune system develop antibodies that can neutralize infecting viruses. Signals from IL-21 appear to be necessary for generating long-lived plasma cells, which reside in the bone marrow and secrete antibodies.

Rasheed and his colleagues probed mice that were unable to respond to IL-21, because the mice were engineered to lack the gene for the IL-21 receptor. They examined the altered mice in the context of three different types of viral infections: LCMV (lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus), VSV (vesicular stomatitis virus), and influenza.

When infected with each of the three viruses separately, the altered mice did start to produce antibodies, but antibody levels faded out over the course of around two months. The mice "exhibited a profound defect in generating long-lived plasma cells and in sustaining antibody levels over time," the authors write.

Rasheed's team demonstrated that IL-21 is playing a role in germinal centers, structures in the lymph nodes and spleen where cells that produce high-affinity antibodies are selected. In the IL-21 receptor deficient mice, germinal centers form but are not sustained. IL-21 signals are important both for the antibody-producing cells and for T helper cells that support them, the researchers showed.

We did find hard to believe, but HA is making "BANK" on the northwest Pacific, one never knows.

I find this very hard to believe as HA already has the A350 on order. If it was actually true, I'm sure this news would have been known/published by now.

Not going to get my hopes up, but this could actually make a lot of sense for them. It's very believable. They could feel that 2017 is too long for the capabilities the A358 will offer them. They have 6 A358s on order. They could simply lease these 777s for 3-4 years, or incorporate into their long term fleet strategy, possibly accelerating 767 retirements or converting them to A332 orders. Or just taking them all.

I think there are three options here:

1 - it's not happening.
2 - ha ha ha, pull the other one.
3 - oink oink flap, is that a flying pig I just saw?

This makes absolutely no sense. Maybe one for a specific route, like LA going for 5 A340s for very particular routes they needed to fly nonstop, but 6 777s on an airline with the network size of HA and A350s on order? Not gonna happen. That mechanic was having some fun.

Uh, this makes far too much sense to simply dismiss like an outlandish practical joke...

Not saying its going to happen or I often believe these employee stories, but there are ample reasons to do it. Aircraft with 50+ more seats for profitable Asian routes and longer range instead of waiting 4-5 years for it.

I highly doubt Boeing would be interested in a 3-4 year lease of new frames. What other than the 772ER would HA be interested in? The 77W is a beast and a massive upguage in capacity, and I cannot see them needing the 77L.

There is no way Boeing is going to short-term lease new 772's because they're not really in demand now, let alone 5 years from now. That's 6 fairly new birds that have to be placed again in 5 years, when most carriers are going to be dumping theirs. I could see this being placement of used frames, but then again why wouldn't they just go back to Airbus and get their hands on more A332's?

I cannot see them wanting to replace a 763 with a 772, that's a lot more weight you're carrying around. Then again, I don't run HA, so what do I know.

Boeing does not typically lease airplanes directly to customers.

As to commercial lessors who do, ALC has 10 777-300ERs on recent order, of which one is going to KL. So that leaves a possible nine available for other customers (assuming HA is interested in a 777-300ER).

I was thinking of that too but leasing brandnew 777's is expensive, especially when it's only for 3-4 years. Does HA want to lease such a big airplane just for 3-4 years? Keeping them permanent also means going away from their road to standardizing around Airbus so when looking at this, it also makes no sense to add another aircraft type to the fleet, especially a small fleet of 6 that is claimed here.

Didn't HA and Boeing get in some pissing match and that's why HA bought the A330's to begin with?

The only reason Hawaiian would get 777 is to fly to Europe from HNL. They need them for the distance not the higher capacity from an A330-200. Hawaiian fits lots of seats into their A330-200, their First Class is 45 inch pitch like domestic First nothing like international J class.

Won't EK have some 773 coming onto the market soon?

I have a really hard time believing this for the following reasons:
1. HA plan is to have a ALL Airbus long-haul fleet.
2. You would need to train a few crews to be certified for a sub-fleet that would only last 3-4 years, and that would be very expensive to do.
3. You would need to train a few mechanics to work on a sub-fleet that is only in service for 3-4 years, again this would very expensive to do.
4. With all the money HA would invest in a) leasing the 6 T7's b) training the crews c) training the mechanics would they even make a profit?

P.S.: You might want to take my statements with a grain of salt considering I'm a die hard Airbus fan? ?

Wouldn't the A359 do that better?

For such a small fleet it would make a lot more sense to lease A333's or even A346's if they were looking for interim capacity.

This rumour is just that a rumour that is unfounded no matter the source. A mechanic? A pilot. A F/A. Any rumours coming from these guys are useless.

They have to train the 767-300 pilots on the A330-200 and I expect also training some of them on the 777 would not be a great hardship.

Lets dream a little....a 773 in HA colors at LAX would be beautiful

If A350 production slots are full until 2017(note I do not know if that is true or not) converting their order to the A359 won't get them in their hands any faster. Even if slots are available an order conversion to something with an earlier EIS doesn't necessarily move them up in the production.

You seriously do not believe that Europeans want to fly 16-17 hours to go to the beach do you?
During the off season its hard enough to convince people on the East Coast of the US to make the 10 hour journey to Hawaii when they could be in the Caribbean in 3-4 hours. If Europeans want a fun in the sun beach vacation I'm sure there are a lot of destinations that are a whole lot closer than a 16-17 hour nonstop flight to Hawaii.
And just out of curiosity how much would a round trip ticket in coach go for at today's current fuel prices on a flight like that? It most certainly would not be cheap because Hawaiian would need to charge enough to cover their own cost and then hope to make a profit on a plane that would have very few premium seats. There has been a lot of talk in previous threads on A.netters about one or two airlines wanting operating a Hawaii to Europe nonstop but how would they do a flight of this length profitably in a market that is dominated by cost conscious leisure travelers? And even if the airlines could do a flight like this profitably how would they convince passengers that Hawaii is worth the 16-17 hour flight. If you can't convince people of that it doesn't matter what type aircraft you use, you still are going to loosing money because your flying a plane filled with empty seats.

why not try and lease some more A330s instead?
