Golden Frog VyprVPN

VyprVPN from Golden Frog easily protects your online activity from digital snoops and hides your geographic location. Your computer and mobile devices communicate with Websites and other systems online by sending and receiving data packets. Anyone with a packet sniffer?your Internet Service Provider, the owner of the WiFi network you are using, or someone up to no good?could intercept that data stream and see what you are up to. Businesses rely on the Virtual Private Network to protect remote employees and their networks; a VPN service such as VyprVPN extends that protection to end-users. VyprVPN supports all major operating systems and provides users with varying degrees of protection.

When the VPN service is active, all the packets travel through a protected tunnel between the user's computer and Golden Frog servers. The servers handle all communications with the destination site, and responses are sent back to the PC through the same encrypted tunnel. Sites that try to identify you by your IP address see one of Golden Frog's IP addresses instead.

VyprVPN has servers in the U.S. (Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Austin, TX), Europe (London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris), Canada (Toronto), and Asia (Hong Kong).

Pricing Plans
VyprVPN comes in two flavors, basic and Pro. Plain VyprVPN, at $14.99 a month, is available only for Windows and Mac OS X systems. It uses the PPTP protocol standard 128-bit encryption for its VPN connections. PPTP is widely deployed as it is built into most desktop and mobile operating systems, making it easy to set up. Since it uses basic encryption, it is the fastest among VyprVPN's options.

Users who want to use the VPN service on their iOS and Android devices must sign up for VyprVPN Pro, at $19.99 a month. The Pro version supports PPTP, OpenVPN SSL, and L2TP/IPSec. While PPTP uses 128-bit encryption, L2TP/IPSec uses 256-bit encryption and OpenVPN offers both 160-bit and 256-bit. L2TP/IPSec relies on the highest encryption so it has slower performance. OpenVPN, which relies on digital certificates, is reliable and performs very well. However, OpenVPN is not available for iOS.

Both Pro and basic versions offer users free 5GB online storage on Golden Frog's cloud storage service, Dump Truck. With Dump Truck, users can securely upload and share files with others. Unlike many of its competitors, Golden Frog does not offer free trial or ad-supported versions.

Getting Started
Users sign up for a Golden Frog account after buying either the basic or the pro version. An account confirmation email contains the link to the dashboard and to setup instructions. When I logged into the portal, I saw a well-laid out dashboard with information about VyprVPN on the left side of the screen and the Dump Truck cloud storage service on the right.

While you can use the VyprVPN credentials on multiple devices, only one device can be connected at a time. I can see if a device is currently using the service on this dashboard. Suppose you left your home PC connected and now you want to switch to your tablet. I can just log in to the dashboard and disconnect the PC. It would have been nice to be able to use devices simultaneously, the way Norton Hotspot Privacy does. At least VyprVPN sends a notification to the disconnected PC the connection has been dropped.

Users download the client applications for VyprVPN for Mac and for Windows from the dashboard, or for Pro users, click on links back to Google Play and iTunes for the Android and iOS apps. I can just use the client applications or follow the set up instructions to manually configure the VPN clients that came with my operating system. This means that as long as the device supports VPN, I should be able to configure it with VyprVPN credentials. If my router has DD-WRT firmware, I could just install VyprVPN and protect all users on the network in one step. I like this uncommon feature; I've seen it in only HideIPVPN and PrivateInternetAccess so far.

Installing the client application took only a few moments. Since VyprVPN also supports the OpenVPN protocol, the installer adds the TAP-WIN32 adapter, in the same way as competitors VPN Direct and HideIPVPN

Starting the software for the first time opens up a settings window where you enter the login credentials and select the connection settings, such as the geographic location of the server and the connection type. By default, the VPN settings are set to PPTP. There are also other settings, such as automatically reconnecting if the connection ever drops and automatically enabling the VPN service whenever the user connects to an unsecured wireless network.

The software is extremely lightweight, so it is easy to forget it is running. Like Private Internet Access, VyprVPN did not have an actual application window when I launched the program. All I got was a tiny lock icon in the system tray, and when I right-clicked on the icon, I saw a menu listing my current network settings and the option to go back into the Settings screen.

Golden Frog offers NAT Firewall as a separate add-on for $5 to block unrequested inbound traffic, such as bots scanning for open ports to exploit. Most wireless routers use Network Address Translation to share the single Internet connection across all connected devices, and when it receives unrequested inbound scans, it doesn't know which device it is for and blocks it automatically. Since VyprVPN bypasses the router and establishes a direct connection with the Golden Frog server, users aren't protected from malicious inbound traffic via the router's NAT. The NAT Firewall add-on protects users from these scans while connected to VyprVPN?Next: Using VyprVPN, Performance

coverlovetheftLove and Theft may be celebrating the release of their second studio album, but to the ACM-nominated country duo, the self-titled release might as well be their first.

And in a way, it is. Love and Theft is Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson?s first album since joining RCA Nashville, the home to many of their musical inspirations. ?We feel like people will be hearing us for the first time,? says Eric.

Stephen agrees and credits the label?s storied history with helping to reenergize the band. ?The history of RCA Records is incredible. Just knowing that we are on the same label as some of our biggest influences, like Elvis Presley, is an awesome feeling.?

That excitement is palpable throughout the 11 songs that comprise the album, a fluid mix of country melodies and sing-along choruses, all driven by Eric?s earthy voice and Stephen?s high-altitude tenor. The guys share lead vocals, harmonize like a church choir and bolster their songs with their own guitar playing. ?We sound like brothers when we sing,? says Eric. ?Stephen and I have always been on the same page as far as the vision for the band, and we feel like we have made the record we?ve always wanted to make.?

Produced by Josh Leo (Alabama, Nitty Gritty Dirty Band), Love and Theft is a nod to the duo?s varied influences. The rollicking first single ?Angel Eyes??which scored the twosome their first CMT Music Awards nomination for Duo Video of the Year?brings to mind Elvis Presley?s ?(You?re the) Devil in Disguise.? The pair is equally enthusiastic about ?Runnin? Out of Air,? a tune they describe as ?Maroon 5 meets the Eagles.?

Stephen and Eric?s experiences growing up in the Bible Belt help inform the new album, especially on the wild-child single ?Angel Eyes,? which Eric co-wrote with Eric Paslay and Jeff Coplan. ?Preacher?s kids seem to have the most rebellious side and get in trouble more,? Eric admits with a laugh. ?That was kind of the inspiration for that. We wrote it from a personal place.?

With a renewed emphasis on organic sounds, their second album has brought Love and Theft closer to what it set out to be: a band that writes, records and performs honest, soulful country music.

?This record represents the way we sound live,? says Stephen, before?like the musical brothers they are?Eric completes the thought. ?It shows a more mature, evolved Love and Theft but the core is still the same,? he says. ?Our sound will always be driven by harmonies.?

New Rosa Parks statue: 'She defied injustice'

President Obama and Congressional leaders paid tribute to Rosa Parks today, as the civil rights pioneer took her "rightful place" among those who have shaped the nation's history.

"She defied the odds and she defied injustice," Obama said at the unveiling of a statue of Rosa Parks at the U.S. Capitol. "She lived a life of activism, but also a life of dignity and grace. And in a single moment, with the simplest of gestures, she helped change America and change the world."

In 1955, Parks refused to move to the back of a segregated bus in Montgomery, Ala., sparking a movement against racial prejudice with one simple act. More than half a century later, she became the first African-American woman honored with a statute in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall.

"So we place her here, in a chamber where many fought to prevent a day like this," House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said. "For when the trappings of ceremony come down, people from all walks, backgrounds and beliefs will pass through here?. It will be an ordinary routine, but one that about half a century ago would have been improbable. I can think of no more perfect way to capture the vision of a more perfect union ? and to continue what Rosa Parks started."

"With this statue, we affirm that the courage and the cause of Rosa Parks not only earned her a place in the hearts of all Americans, but a permanent place among the other figures in this hall of national memory," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell proclaimed. "This simple carpenter's daughter from Tuskegee is honored as a national hero. What a story. What a legacy. What a country."

The "seamstress slight in stature but mighty in courage" continues to inspire Americans to face today's challenges, Obama said.

"Rosa Parks tells us there's always something we can do. She tells us that we all have responsibilities to ourselves and to one another. She reminds us that this is how change happens, not mainly through the exploits of the famous and the powerful but through the countless acts of often anonymous courage and kindness and fellow feeling and responsibility that continually, stubbornly expand our conception of justice, our conception of what is possible," he said.

"That is why this statue belongs in this hall: to remind us, no matter how humble or lofty our positions, just what it is that leadership requires, just what it is that citizenship requires," Obama said.

Research explores factors that impact adolescent mental health

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Research indicates that half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, well before adulthood. Three new studies investigate the cognitive, genetic and environmental factors that may contribute to mental health disorders in adolescence.

The studies are published in Psychological Science and Clinical Psychological Science, journals of the Association for Psychological Science.

Social-Information-Processing Patterns Mediate the Impact of Preventive Intervention on Adolescent Antisocial Behavior

Kenneth A. Dodge, Jennifer Godwin, and The Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group

Fast Track is a preventive intervention designed to help children who show aggression at an early age. The intervention addresses kids' social-cognitive processes in several ways, including social-skill training groups, parent groups, and classroom curricula. In this study, the researchers investigated the processes underlying this intervention's success. A total of 891 kindergarteners who were at high risk for adolescent antisocial behavior were randomly assigned to receive either the Fast Track intervention or a control program. The data revealed that children in the intervention showed decreased levels of antisocial behavior at the end of 9th grade, which was driven, in part, by improvement on three specific social-cognitive processes. These results suggest that social-cognitive processes may play an important role in the development of antisocial behavior in youth.

A Comparison of Two Models of Urgency: Urgency Predicts Both Rash Action and Depression in Youth

Gregory T. Smith, Leila Guller, and Tamika C.B. Zapolski

Smith and colleagues test two competing theories concerning the trait of urgency. One theory posits that urgency reflects the people's tendency to act rashly or impulsively when they're emotional. Another theory suggests that urgency reflects a general responsiveness to emotions that can lead to rash action (such as heavy drinking or binge eating) or ill-advised inaction (which is associated with symptoms of depression). In previous research, Smith and colleagues found that urgency levels in 5th grade predicted addictive behaviors (including alcohol consumption, binge eating, and smoking) in 6th grade, which is consistent with both theories. In this study, the researchers found that level of urgency in 5th grade also predicted higher levels of depression at the end of 6th grade. These results support the view that urgency can lead either to rash action or ill-advised inaction. The researchers conclude that urgency may be an important trait in various diagnoses, across both internalizing and externalizing disorders.

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Rumination, Distraction, and Depressed Mood in Adolescence

Mollie N. Moore, Rachel H. Salk, Carol A. Van Hulle, Lyn Y. Abramson, Janet S. Hyde, Kathryn Lemery-Chalfant, and H. Hill Goldsmith

About one in 10 adolescents will experience major depression or dysthymia by age 18. Rumination, the process of dwelling on one's feelings and problems, is an established cognitive risk factor for depression. In this study, Moore and colleagues investigated whether response styles associated with rumination might account for some of the genetic vulnerability associated with depression. A total of 756 adolescent twins ages 12 to 14 completed the Response Styles Questionnaire and several measures of depressive symptoms. Brooding was positively correlated with depressive symptoms, while distraction was negatively correlated with the symptoms. About 54% of the variation in depression symptoms could be attributed to genetic variation, while 37% of the variation in reflection and 30% of the variation in distraction were accounted for by genetic variation. Further analyses showed that individual differences in distraction share both genetic and environmental sources of variation with depression. Together, these results suggest that the same genetic factors that contribute to distraction may protect against depression.

Samsung Homesync - hands-on with the Android-powered TV box

As a global electronics giant, Samsung has presence in every room in the home, most notably the living room -- the company recently claimed to be selling three TVs every second. And as we all know, Samsung currently dominates the Android smartphone landscape. So it was only a matter of time before the Samsung TV and Android worlds collided.

At Mobile World Congress this week we got our first look at Samsung's Homesync, a 1-terabyte TV box with a Google Play-certified Android front-end. Homesync delivers a full Android experience, with a TouchWiz-based UI that actually scales up really well to the big screen. The main view is a grid of running windows, and you've also got a standard app drawer view, along with on-screen keys you can hit using your pointer.

Lawyer says Lohan committed to turning life around

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan is committed to turning her life around and wants to record public service announcements on the dangers of domestic violence, alcohol abuse and drunken driving, her attorney said Wednesday.

Mark Heller told The Associated Press that the actress' plans are independent of a criminal case that could return her to jail on charges that she lied to police about being a passenger in her car when it slammed into a dump truck in June.

The "Liz & Dick" star has been repeatedly sentenced to jail, rehab, and community service since her first pair of arrests for driving under the influence in 2007. She spent several months in court-ordered psychotherapy until a judge released her from supervised probation in March 2012.

As part of the intense psychotherapy sessions, Lohan is in the beginning stages of trying to become an inspirational speaker to young people, he said.

"I think she suddenly woke up one morning and had an epiphany and she suddenly realized and appreciated the seriousness of the events that led to her being in court," Heller said.

"She's going to try to inspire hope in people," he said. "I think it will be good for her. It certainly won't hurt others."

Heller mentioned Lohan's intent to become an inspirational speaker in a letter to prosecutors and a judge that was obtained Tuesday. He said he will meet with prosecutors on Friday to try to reach a resolution in Lohan's newest case, which includes misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and obstructing officers from performing their duties.

She has pleaded not guilty. Lohan, 26, was on probation at the time of the crash and faces up to 245 days in jail if a judge determines her conduct violated her probation in a 2011 necklace theft case.

Officers suspected alcohol might have been involved in the June accident on Pacific Coast Highway, but the actress passed sobriety tests at a hospital and she was never charged with driving under the influence.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said officers did not give Lohan a field sobriety test at the accident scene because she and her assistant were injured in the crash and were taken to a nearby hospital. While officers could not rule out that Lohan might have been drinking, he noted that she did not show signs of impairment.

Celebrity web site TMZ, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that a bottle of alcohol was found next to Lohan's sports car after the crash. Lewis said he could not discuss evidence in the case, but noted that the actress was not charged with drunken driving.

Heller wrote in a motion filed last week that officers found a bottle that they initially thought was urine, but might have contained wine. His filing, which seeks a delay or dismissal of charges against the actress, states that "upon information and belief" the bottle's contents were never tested.

Lohan's case returns to court on Friday, although the actress is not required to attend.

Heller is asking a judge to dismiss the case against Lohan because officers ignored the actress' request to talk to her attorney before being interviewed, court records show. He said he is prepared to defend Lohan at trial if necessary, but is hoping a deal can be worked out. He is seeking a delay in the case to have time to prepare and allow Lohan to demonstrate she is improving her life.

Threats from judges and jail sentences that are invariably cut short because of overcrowding haven't helped Lohan, Heller said. "None of it really brought closure to this predicament that led to this most recent event."

Sony Mobile has 'an ambition' to launch Firefox OS device in 2014

Despite what your feelings may be about Firefox OS, various OEMs and carriers are clearly content with having more options to explore. The latest outfit appears to be Sony's Mobile entity, which, earlier today, announced it had reached multi-year deal with Telefónica which will "explore the development" of a device running Mozilla's novel operating system. What's more, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Head of Products Business Group, Bob Ishida, says Sony Mobile engineers are already working on a project with the new mobile OS on the block, adding that the eventual goal is to "bring a product to market in 2014." Now, whether we'll see higher-end slabs than some of the ones we've experienced thus far, well, dear readers, that remains to be seen.

Non-brittle glass possible: In probing mysteries of glass, researchers find a key to toughness

Feb. 26, 2013 ? In a paper published online Feb. 26 in the journal Nature Communications, a Yale University team and collaborators propose a way of predicting whether a given glass will be brittle or ductile -- a desirable property typically associated with metals like steel or aluminum -- and assert that any glass could have either quality.

Ductility refers to a material's plasticity, or its ability to change shape without breaking.

"Most of us think of glasses as brittle, but our finding shows that any glass can be made ductile or brittle," said Jan Schroers, a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Yale, who led the research with Golden Kumar, a professor at Texas Tech University. "We identified a special temperature that tells you whether you form a ductile or brittle glass."

The key to forming a ductile glass, they said, is cooling it fast. Exactly how fast depends on the nature of the specific glass.

Focusing on a new group of glasses known as bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) -- metal alloys, or blends, that can be extremely pliable yet also as strong as steel -- researchers studied the effect of a so-called critical fictive temperature (CFT) on the glasses' mechanical properties at room temperature.

When forming from liquid, there is a temperature at which glass becomes too viscous for reconfiguration and freezes. This temperature is called the glass transition temperature. Based on experiments with three representative bulk metallic glasses, the researchers said there is also, for each distinct alloy, a critical temperature that determines the brittleness or plasticity of the glass. This is the CFT.

Researchers said it's possible to categorize glasses in two groups -- those that will be brittle because in liquid form their CFT is above the glass transition temperature, and those that will be ductile, because in liquid form their CFT is below the glass transition temperature.

They previously thought a liquid's chemical composition alone would determine whether a glass would be brittle or ductile.

"That's not the case," Schroers said. "We can make any glass theoretically ductile or brittle. And it is the critical fictive temperature which determines how experimentally difficult it is to make a ductile glass. That is the major contribution of this work."

The finding applies theoretically to all glasses, not metallic glasses only, he said.

"A glass can have completely different properties depending on the rate at which you cool it," Schroers said. "If you cool it fast, it is very ductile, and if you cool it slow it?s very brittle. We anticipate that our finding will contribute to the design of ductile glasses, and in general contribute to a deeper understanding of glass formation."

Get your search for the perfect holiday home right - Inspiration for ...

For many people, escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life for just a week or two isn?t enough. Sometimes visiting a particular location can melt those stresses away, which is why a holiday home can be the perfect respite from it all.

It is important to remember that buying that perfect home-away-from home for those vacation times is a big decision to make, and it needs thorough consideration. The purchase of such a home is an important financial and lifestyle investment and must be right in every way. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure that the search for the perfect holiday home is a little easier.

Getting started is always the first step

The first step in the search for a vacation home is to select the location, which should be researched very carefully. Consult with the whole family and decide as a group where that ideal destination might be ? it could be in a big city with lots to do, an isolated beach house, or something in-between. A true getaway home should be in a destination where everyone can relax, unwind, and have a great time.

If the destination is already decided, it?s time to begin the house hunt. For destinations overseas or far away from the family?s home base, the best way to initiate the search is online ? start by doing a search for something like ?US houses for sale? and then narrowing your options. Check for villas, condos, apartments, and chalets for sale. Reach out to a local real estate agent for assistance in this process. Once a few homes have been selected, it?s time to book a trip to that destination to check out the options.

As the search for the vacation house is pursued, the available budget must always play a role. How much money is available for a down payment on a vacation home? What sort of money is available for maintenance, upkeep, and furnishings for this additional property? After purchasing a particular home, will there be funds left over to enjoy the holiday every year? Remember, making the purchase is the first expense, but like any other home, a vacation home will have ongoing costs as well.

Selecting the ideal holiday home

Remember, the whole point of buying a vacation home is to have a retreat from the frenetic life that we now all lead in our working lives, so location, design, and other factors are the overriding consideration. Because it is a home intended for fun and relaxing, it doesn?t need to be located near a good school or even a workplace. It should be conducive to things the family likes to do. For example, if a family loves the ocean but lives inland, a beach house will prove to be the perfect solution. For someone that has always wanted to try winemaking, perhaps a home in the hills of California?s wine country might do nicely.

The layout of the vacation home should also promote relaxation and a good time, so make sure everyone has plenty of space to stretch out! In most cases, a vacation home will be somewhat smaller than the family?s regular home, but it shouldn?t be cramped. For example, the kids can share a bedroom, but there should be plenty of communal living space in the property where everyone can enjoy their time together.

In essence, the perfect second home should be in a great location. It should also be designed, and equipped in such a way that the family will fully enjoy being there. Making sure that the vacation home is different enough from the normal home is essential, otherwise no one will feel like they are really on vacation.

?Smart people are a dime a dozen; what really matters is being able to think imaginatively, to think creatively,? Walter Isaacson said. | Mary Dahdouh/The Daily Cougar

Steve Jobs had begun to see a connection between Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein and himself, said biographer Walter Isaacson on Friday at the Farfel Distinguished Lecture.

?I got a phone call from (Jobs) ? and I had written about Benjamin Franklin, was just about to come out with the biography of Albert Einstein ? and Steve talked to me and asked, ?Why not do me next??? Isaacson said.

?Of course my first reactions was ?OK, Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein (and) Steve Jobs?,? and I told him ?Your humility hasn?t fully deepened since we first met? but after a while I realized, especially when he was sick and battling cancer, that he was a person who had transformed seven industries in America.?

Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute as well as former CEO of CNN and editor of Time Magazine, was honored as the 2013 Farfel Distinguished Lecture speaker.

The Farfel Distinguished Lectureship is UH?s most prestigious award that honors the leadership of Aaron Farfel, who served on the UH System Board of Regents for 16 years.

?The process of selecting the speaker for the Farfel lecture is one that engages a number of people in the University. We really want it to be something that enlightens individuals and creates conversation about a topic that maybe people aren?t discussing as much as we would like,? said Karen Clarke, associate vice president of marketing and communication and associate vice chancellor of marketing and communication for the UH System.

?(Isaacson) is a great story teller. There are a lot of academics who have evocative ideas, but it?s difficult for them to engage a larger group in those concepts and ideas. One thing that we liked best about Isaacson was that he is clearly able to tell a story and give analogies and things like that, which really draw you in so you learn a lesson and get the point in a way that?s memorable,? Clarke said.

Throughout the lecture, Isaacson continually told heartfelt stories about Jobs, as well as Franklin and Einstein, which truly brought together the minds of all three men to focus on intellectual creativity.?Some were perplexed by the connection Isaacson made between the three men, but many agreed.

?You absolutely can?t go anywhere in America without seeing an Apple product somewhere,? said chemistry junior Camden Kirkland. ?The man literally revolutionized how computing and technology are used in both America and the world.?

Jobs? endless passion for pursuing perfection and his motivation for pushing past boundaries were as widespread as his products, Isaacson said. This passion of his was expressed in one of Jobs? favorite sayings, ?Don?t be afraid. You can do it.?

Jobs, alongside Franklin and Einstein, has revolutionized the world in some way through his ingenuity.

?I realized that there was a common thread between Steve and my original two: Franklin and Einstein. That common thread was imagination and creativity,? Isaacson said. ?Smart people are a dime a dozen; what really matters is being able to think imaginatively, to think creatively.?

With that common thread established, Isaacson concluded by explaining Jobs? beliefs on simple beauty.

When Jobs looked at the first iPod, he questioned the necessity of an on and off switch, Isaacson said.

?And it dawned on me that they don?t need it: If you stopped using your iPod for long enough, it powered down and when you started using it again, it powered itself up. It was the beauty in simplicity that he saw,? Isaacson said.

Isaacson provided insight to the philosophical side of Jobs, one that was suitably demonstrated through a technological medium.

?I said to him, ?Do you still believe in the spirit of life? Do you believe that something lives on?? and he said, ?Yeah, I like to believe that, but then sometimes I?m just a little bit afraid that it?s just like an on and off switch ? when you die, you just click off and you?re gone,?? Isaacson said.

?I was somewhat taken aback, then he gave me that little half smile he had, then he said ?Maybe that?s why I didn?t like putting on/off switches on Apple devices,?? Isaacson said.

Algerian gas plant in terror siege resumes work

(AP) ? A gas installation in Algeria that was the site of a terrorist attack last month that left 37 hostages dead partially resumed production Sunday, as the head of the state-owned energy company said he would request armed personnel for energy plants to help prevent future assaults on sites that can be hundreds of miles from the nearest city.

Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal started up one of three gas streams at the Ain Amenas site, bringing it up to about 35 percent capacity, according to state radio.

On Jan. 16, a band of al-Qaida affiliated militants attacked the Ain Amenas complex and took dozens of foreign workers hostage. After a four-day standoff, the Algerian army moved in and killed 29 attackers and captured three others. At least 37 hostages, including one Algerian worker, died in the battle.

The Ain Amenas facility is jointly run by BP, Algeria's Sonatrach and Norway's Statoil. Sunday marked the anniversary of Algeria's 1971 nationalization of its oil industry.

Andelhamid Zerguine, head of Sonatrach, said the attack highlighted security weaknesses that the state-owned company hoped to address, particularly the absence of armed personnel to protect installations.

"We carried out a review to try to determine where we could be stronger," he said.

Get-Good-Information-Here-About-Solar-Energy-To-Help-You-Decide

From HOPE

Gain an understanding of your own energy usage. If you are considering solar panels, realize how much power you use. In order to pick the right size, this information is critical. You should look at your yearly energy bill since costs vary by season.

Generally speaking, a solar energy system for home heating costs $4000 - $6000. Think about how fast you will earn that back through savings and then continue forward in the green for years and years. Solar panels can always be installed a few at a time.

Your solar panel vendor's reputation is key. Find online reviews, talk to former clients, and ask for a few references before signing the paperwork. If you cannot find good reviews for a vendor, you should keep looking even if the prices are interesting.

It is best that you purchase a solar panel system after you have already paid off your home. However, think long and hard before doing so. If there is a chance of losing your home, you will also lose any money you invest in it.

A lot of governments throughout the world could offer tax credits for those that use solar energy. You might get as much as 30% of the installation cost back! You should do some research on the Internet or get in touch with your local government to find out more about the incentives and programs you are eligible for.

Pathway lighting is a simple and affordable means to take advantage of solar energy. The lights seem diminutive, but they pack a punch; they quietly gather the sun's rays in the daytime and then light up at night. They are a set-and-forget way to improve your outdoor space.

As far as solar panels go, bigger is not always better. There are many things to consider with regards to solar panels, such as materials used, build quality, etc. Consider every one of these points before making any decisions.

If you're not ready to fully change to solar energy, check out attic fans that are solar powered. The fan will turn itself on when your attic gets too hot. This can help reduce energy costs by removing heat. Also because it's run by solar energy, you won't have to pay for the electricity it creates.

Don't work with pushy salespeople. This industry has a lot of salespeople like this. You should be able to tell them that you'll consider a deal later instead of right away. If a salesperson is relying on pressure to close sales, he probably has a very low level of confidence in the quality of his product. Pressure can lead to poor decisions.

Select a mounting system that allows the orientation of the solar panels to be changed. These panels offer the best results due to their ability to change with the seasons. Look to solar energy experts for insight on the most effective position for solar panels.

With your new information in hand, you ought to understand the amazing potential of solar energy. Be proactive and add solar energy to your house. Implement the tips you've just read and reap the benefits of solar power.

HP launches Slate 7 Android tablet with Beats Audio for $169

The HP Slate 7 is beyond fashionably late to the Android tablet party, but it tries to make up for its tardiness with a very low price. When the device arrives in April, HP?s first Google-powered tablet just announced at this year?s Mobile World Congress will cost just $169. That?s $30 less than the the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD. So how does this value-priced device stand out? HP is playing up the Slate 7?s Beats Audio sound and wireless printing capabilities.

The Slate 7 certainly doesn?t look like a $169 tablet, thanks to its stainless steel frame and soft-touch back that?s available in gray or red. The device measures .42 inches thick (about the same as the Kindle Fire HD?s .41 inches) and weighs 13.05 ounces, making this tablet lighter than the Fire (13.9 ounces) but heavier than the Nexus 7 (12 ounces). The Slate 7 has a microSD card slot and microUSB port.

To differentiate its tablet, the Slate 7 is the first with Beats Audio built in, which is designed to deliver richer and more robust sound. According to Alberto Torres, HP?s senior vice president of its Mobility Global Business Unit, Beats really kicks in when you?re using headphones. However, the Slate 7 does sport stereo speakers. As you might expect from HP, the Slate 7 has wireless printing capabilities via ePrint. The app lets you print from most applications.

As you might expect from HP, the Slate 7 has wireless printing capabilities via ePrint. The app lets you print from most applications.

MORE: Top 10 tablets right now

The Slate 7 does skimp on some specs for its low price. For starters, the 1024 x 600-pixel display has a lower resolution than the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 (both 1280 x 800). On the other hand, HP says its High-aperture-ratio Field Fringe Switching (HFFS) technology gives its panel wide viewing angles, whether you?re viewing documents or playing Angry Birds Space.

Powering this Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet is a 1.6-GHz ARM A9 dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM, and you?ll find 8GB of storage on board. The Slate 7 features a VGA camera up front and a fairly low-res 3-MP camera on the back. By comparison, the Nexus 7 boasts a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, though HP claims that its device offers swift performance.

When we asked HP?s Torres whether shoppers will just opt for the faster Nexus 7 or more family friendly Kindle Fire HD for $30 more, he told us that ?we are going to have a very strong value proposition with Beats Audio and that the design is far superior than those other tablets that you mention.? Torres also reminded us that HP ?wants to be the leader in tablets so to expect other price points.? In other words, don?t be surprised to see a larger, more premium Android Slates in HP?s lineup in the not too distant future.

Stay tuned for Laptop's hands-on impressions of the Slate 7 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Ceton reveals Android, Windows Media Center integration details for its Echo

Ceton reveals plans for Windows Media Center integration for Andriod on its Echo extender

Just after launch, Ceton announced it would bring Android to the Echo Windows Media Center Extender by the end of last year. Owners of the device have been left wondering ever since then: what's the holdup? Now the Ceton Blog has spelled out what's taking so long. Essentially the story goes that Android is optimized for touch screens, rather than the big screen, and the company decided to hold off until some changes could be made. Most interestingly, one of those changes is integrating Windows Media Center into Android, allowing users to access all the content that both platforms have to offer in a single user interface. A hefty goal indeed and one worth waiting for, but the question of when remains. While the post does include some interesting screen shots and other details -- like Windows 8 support -- it stops just short of making another promise to deliver the update in any particular amount time.

Backdown as church removes priest

EXCLUSIVE

Father Thomas Knowles

THE Catholic Church has removed a leading Australian priest who sexually preyed on a disabled and vulnerable woman in NSW.

In an embarrassing U-turn, the Melbourne Archdiocese has removed Father Tom Knowles from one of the nation's busiest churches just weeks after reinstating him.

The move comes after revelations by Fairfax Media last month that a confidential church inquiry had found he had an improper sexual relationship with disabled woman Jennifer Herrick for 14 years in NSW.

As a result of this inquiry, Father Knowles was put on administrative leave for 16 months but was returned to active ministry in January.

His reinstatement was criticised last month by Ms Herrick and victims' groups, especially in light of a confidential letter from the church to her acknowledging ''the harm that can be caused to vulnerable people in such a case''.

Last month, senior church official Father Graeme Duro defended Father Knowles' return to active ministry at St Francis' Church in Melbourne's CBD, stating that the priest had taken "responsibility for his actions ? and it is appropriate for him to return to public ministry''.

But in the past fortnight, other senior church officials have intervened in the case and have had Father Knowles removed.

Church documents obtained by Fairfax Media this week reveal that Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart has formally withdrawn Father Knowles' "faculties to engage in any public ministry within the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Melbourne".

Archbishop Hart is understood to have received letters from concerned Catholic parishioners after Father Knowles' reinstatement was made public.

Ms Herrick said that while she ''believed it was just'' Father Knowles had been stood down, she was ''still incredulous'' she had not been told about it immediately by the church. Ms Herrick was 19 and suffering from bilateral congenital hip dysplasia - which caused her to walk with an abnormal gait - when Father Knowles, who was then her family priest, began cultivating a relationship with her and her extended family.

Three years later, the priest initiated sexual intercourse with Ms Herrick, who had never had sex before. The sexual relationship continued for 14 years and Ms Herrick later described it to church investigators as abusive and exploitative conduct.

''Archbishop Hart was overseas when I formally communicated to him in early January the decision to return Father Knowles to ministry,'' Father Duro said.

''On the return of the Archbishop, I met with him and he advised me of his decision to remove the faculties from Father Knowles from public ministry ? There is no present intention for Father Knowles to engage in public ministry.''

Ms Herrick has received no payment for media contact regarding this issue. She hopes other women will have the courage to tell their own stories.
