Former Auburn football player born without foot to speak at Columbus event

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A former Auburn football player who was born without a foot will be the special guest at a Columbus?event to celebrate achievements of people with disabilities.

Lewis Colbert will speak at the event which will be held on the Plaza Level of the Government Center Tower on Thursday, June 21.

Colbert is the author of the book "The Unlikeliest Auburn Tiger," and played under legendary coach Pat Dye.

When asked about Colbert, Dye had this to say:

"As a little boy growing up in the country near Phenix City, Lewis could barely even walk. He had to have numerous surgeries and special shoes with springs and braces and I don?t know what all. I know he couldn?t play football. I know he didn?t have a foot when he was born. And, I know he did not even play football until his senior year of high school. Lewis continually overcame adversity while growing up under tough situations. Like a lot of those other players I recruited to Auburn from tough circumstances, Lewis in the end had the toughness, the patience, the guts, the willpower ? all those words that describe the same thing ? to overcome and excel. He became valuable as a teammate and a friend and a leader."

The event will also?recognize those who strive to raise awareness to make Columbus a better place to live, work and play. The mayor will hand out awards and meet with the organizations that are helping the disabled community.

The event will go from 10 a.m. until noon.
